Product Review: Magic Chef 4.0 Cu. Ft. Refrigerator/Freezer

Our old Kenmore fridge/freezer, which was used for cool drinks and stocking up on discounted freezer items, decided to get so cold that the bottles and cans of coke decided to explode.

We have a townhouse and our kitchen is upstairs. Therefore we purchased a new fridge/freezer when we moved to this house. The old Kenmore came along and used to sit in the utility room with the washer and dryer.

First off we were going to purchase another one around 15-18 cu. ft. We checked out Sears, Lowe's, and Home Depot. They were all around $379 to $399 for a very basic one.

While we were in Home Depot we saw the Magic Chef refrigerator. It looked the perfect size for an apartment, dorm, or for what we needed.

The sides, top, and back are black and the 2 front doors look like stainless steel with black edging. The freezer is on the top with the fridge below.

We purchased it and brought it home. It had to stand upright for 4 hours and then we switched it on to the maximum setting of 7 for 15 to 20 minutes. After this we turned it down to halfway.

We took the small amount of food and drinks from our old fridge/freeze and put them into the new one. We then had the old one picked up from a scrap metal dealer.

The size of the unit is 18.6 inches wide, 49.6 inches high, and 18.2 inches deep. It weighs 78.6 lbs.

The inside of the freezer is 13 inches deep and has a shelf to make storing easier. I have put 4 tubs of Edie's sugar free ice cream on the bottom one, and some freezer blocks. On the top of the shelf are several frozen dinners, and some frozen packages of vegetables.

The inside of the fridge is 27 inches in depth. There are 2 shelves and the crisper that has a small shelf over it. The inside door is really neat. There is a compartment for a 2-liter bottle. Cans of drink can be slotted into a bin so that they can be pulled out from the bottom. There is also plenty of room for smaller bottles along the bottom shelf in the door.

Inside the fridge I have snacks for when we are downstairs. There is still plenty of room for other items.

The price was $219 + sales tax.

It uses 290 kwh a year in electricity which equates out to just $24.
