The active component in Turmeric is curcumin and it is believed to have medicinal properties. This is most likely the reason why Turmeric has been used in traditional Asian Medicine for a long time. It is used to treat gastrointestinal upset, arthritis and it also was used to increase energy. In India it has been used for stomach aches and liver ailments.
Turmeric can also be used topically to heal sores. Sprains and swelling, skin disorders and insect bites can be treated with a paste that is made with Turmeric powder. It can also be used as a mouth wash to treat toothaches and other dental pain. Other uses include the treatment of asthma, cardiovascular conditions, cancer, bacterial infections and even anemia because it is rich in iron. Other health benefits that Turmeric may provide include healthy skin care, healthy cholesterol levels and it may even provide gallbladder health.
Laboratory studies that were done at the University of Texas found that Turmeric is useful in preventing the growth of certain cancers such as melanoma tumor cells, breast cancer and colon cancer.
Turmeric is considered a safe health food by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) if only the recommended dose is taken.
