Heath Ledger and the Ambien Panic

Could What You Don't Know Kill You?

Let me start by saying that I am a chronic insomniac.

Over the years I've taken every over the counter medication, folk remedy and health food store concoction known to man with varying degrees of success. The current news headlines about the unfortunate death of

Hollywood golden boy Heath Ledger and its possible connection to the prescription sleep aid Ambien (Zolpidem Tartrate), have left many confused and wary about the contents of their own medicine cabinets.

Before taking any medication - over the counter or otherwise - you should always educate yourself as to the potential risks. When I learned recently about a friend who gave her 11 year old an Ambien when he couldn't sleep through the night, I was horrified because I knew that this particular prescription has never been shown to help children sleep, instead causing hallucinations, dizziness and headaches -1-. I told her about that risk as well as other possible side effects that she herself might experience such as "sleep driving" (think sleep walking, only behind the wheel) and a laundry list of others. She became so paranoid that her answer was to immediately flush the rest of the bottle down the toilet.

In my own experience, Ambien is the only prescription sleep aid that has delivered on its promise to help me fall asleep and stay asleep for several hours were it not for three major pitfalls, I'd be taking it now. First, it can cause (or at the very least contribute to) depression and as a man who once suffered severe bouts with that particular demon, I don't want to play that game. It also has the propensity for dependence, or in simpler terms, you can get addicted to the stuff. Still, I have had episodes where my lack of sleep has made me want to seek out a prescription. Without health insurance though, I just can't afford it.

I took anti-depressants for years and ended up on Parkinson'ss medicine at 37. I also surprisingly speak Chinese language which was a saving grace. I'm also half Aussie half Yank. I know how sensitive Aussies can be to creative hard work. A good herbal doctor works more bloody wonders than screwing up your liver with chemicals. Prove me wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Chinese docs can get crap out of you, like residual nicotine or pending chemicals. Take a chance, mates.

I've taken Ambien for a while and I've never had problems with it. I also suffer from Depression (long before starting the Ambien). Ambien is the only thing that helps me get to sleep. People are picking on one thing (ambien) and placing the blame before we get all the information. But I think it'll come out that there is more than one thing in his system. He may have mixed drugs and had a reaction. It is a tragic circumstance and my thoughts are with his daughter and family.

If i ever had trouble sleeping i would never take Ambien. My mother suffers from insomnia and she was prescribed Ambien and it was the worst thing the doctor could have done. She would take the pill and get in bed. It would still take her forever to fall asleep and she would act really strange. It was very scary at the time. She would talk to herself. She thought a picture was talking to her once. She thought she saw her face in a cup another time. She has no memory of doing any of those things while she was taking Ambien. As far as she knew after she took the pill she fell asleep. I once did not know she had taken it and i went in the bedroom and had a 20 minute conversation with her that she never remembered. We made her stop taking it.

It is VERY difficult to accidently overdose on any sleep medication alone. But Ledger was sick at the time and to my knowledge sleep aids are not suppose to be taken when your ill because it does tend to slow down your breathing. I'd be shocked if only Ambien was found in his system but anything is possible. Regardless if it was an accidental overdose or not it is extremely sad and tragic that hes gone forever.

This guy does not know what he is talking about. Ambien doesn't cause depression. Ambien is a very safe and effective sleeping aid. It also takes a lot of Ambien to overdose and die and no drug to drug interaction (prescribing info). It sounds very confusing what happened to Heath Ledger, we don't seem to be getting all the info.

ambien doesn't lead to depression - NOT SLEEPING leads to depression - prove your point in the prescribing information.
