Best Pitcher - PUR Flavor Options Pitcher (2-stage)Price: $30 (includes 1 filter and 1 flavor cartridge)
Annual filter cost: $66 (+ optional flavor cartridges, $10 each)
Why we love it: Push a button to add as much calorie-free fruit flavor as you want, or choose clean-tasting plain water. A light changes color when it's time to replace the filter. Removes 19 contaminants, many more than similar models.

Best Faucet Mount - PUR Water Filtration System (3-stage)
Price: $30-$50 (includes 1 filter)
Annual filter cost: $84
Why we love it: It stops 31 contaminants -- the most of any we tested (the only ones it doesn't get are cadmium, copper, and zinc). It's a bit tricky to install, but once it's on, it produces clear, crisp water with no metallic undertaste. A flashing light shows you when it's time to change the filter.

Best Bargain - Brita Faucet Filtration System (OPFF-100)
Price: $20 (includes 1 filter)
Annual filter cost: $60
Why we love it: It nabs almost as many contaminants as the PUR faucet system, but costs less -- and the filters last about a month longer. (It misses mercury, though, so if that's a problem in your area, cough up for the PUR.) It takes up little sink space and is fairly easy to install (though our tester enlisted assistance).

Filter tips
1. Find the filter that fits your water:
Shop around for a filtration system (amazon.com and stores like Home Depot and Target have a great selection) that removes the contaminants most common in your area.
2. Choose a certified model:
The National Sanitation Foundation International regulates the effectiveness of filtration systems. Yours should meet its Standard 53, which ensures that your filter treats impurities that affect taste and health. Certified products carry NSF seals, but verify at nsf.org/certified/dwtu.
