First, use the calls for content. I'm amazed at how many more hits my articles get when they are responses to the calls for content. What I thought would be my most boring topic - one that I thought no one would be interested in received more hits than any of my other articles. It was a call for content article about the proposed economic stimulus package. The calls for content are often region or location specific. However, if you are able to find an interesting topic, this is a great way to generate hits. The calls for content don't always have up front payments. Nevertheless, in my experience they tend to generate more traffic to your articles, making it worth the effort.

Next, be open to the ideas for topics that surround you. There are limitless ideas for topics if you are open to what is going on around you. Some live in exciting cities where there could be articles about the many different aspects of life in that city - from the nightlife to the restaurant scene to the tourist sites. There are many current events that can be written about and that draw people's attention. This year is a presidential election year, with numerous topics. While associated content generally doesn't pay up front for op-ed pieces, people are interested in what is going on. I have received many hits on my political op-ed articles.

Believe in yourself. You've got to believe that you have something interesting to write about. This goes along with the above stop of looking for topics all around you. Write about those things that interest you. In reality, coming up with an article from 300 to 500 words isn't all that difficult once you get going. And you'd be surprised at how many people are interested in what you have to say.

Be creative. Look at topics from different or unusual points of view. Try not to take the same approach as everyone else, but use your own perspective. There are many things you may understand or notice that others may not have thought about.
