The Biggest Loser Fattened the Cat, but American Idol is Still Top Dog

TV Guide reports that NBC's The Biggest Loser averaged 8.94 million viewers, up 25 percent from last week. This represents gains for The Biggest Loser, the show that is, but it doesn't compete with Tuesday night's American Idol, averaging over 29 million viewers.

American Idol and The Biggest Loser are reality T.V. at its best and worse. Both shows have the potential to elevate and motivate people, and both shows have the ability to denigrate them in front of millions of viewers. At times, it seems almost inhumane, but plenty of humans are tuning in.

What draws us to these shows? Some viewers tend to cheer for their favorite, pulling for them to win American Idol, or lose the most weight on The Biggest Loser. Others, I think, enjoy the catharsis of seeing other humans put to shame and stripped of their dignity. It spares them doing the same in public, yet it fulfills a primitive desire to watch others fail, in turn, making us feel better about ourselves.

On the other hand, each of these contestants knows exactly what they are in for. Contestants on The Biggest Loser are competing to lose weight, change their life, and win $250,000. The exercise and challenges can be grueling, while the challenge involves not just the physical, but the mental and emotional being of the contestants. Yet, they go in willingly. On The Biggest Loser are they driven by a desire to better their health, their wallet, or both?

It is also no secret to American Idol Contestants what they are in for. Very few people in the U.S. or the U.K. are not familiar with Simon Cowell and his blunt, often harsh comments. They know he is likely to rip them to shreds, that's his shtick. If contestants go in knowing this, I don't understand all the wailing and drama afterward when he has bitten a huge chunk out of their self-esteem.

I don't watch the biggest loser, but I like American Idol. I agree I don't know how these people get through the screening process. But they do and if they are kicked off Idol they make it to Leno and Letterman and a host of other talk shows.

I agree with your conclusion-it is not worth the sacrifice.

C'mon, producers! I don't mean to be mean, but is AMERICAN IDOL stacking the deck with no-chance contestants, right from the start, just to gain viewers? How did the feathered suits, flashy capes and other obvious misses get past the first screening process? All about ratings, maybe? ;-)

I heard Idol's ratings are way down this year. So many people were disillusioned by the poor quality of some of last year's performers. I have to agree. I'll tune in when they get down to the nitty gritty but if there are too many who can't carry a tune this year, I'm outta there!

Interesting! I will have to watch The Biggest Loser until American Idol gets to the top 12. By then I might already be committed enough to the BIggest Loser that I'll have to finish out the season though!

GREAT ARTICLE. HOWEVER, I LIKE THE SHOW BIGGEST LOSER BUT I DO NOT REALLY CARE FOR THIS PARTICULAR EPISODE SO IT HAS NOT KEPT MY INTEREST. WHEN I WANT TO LAUGH, I JUST PUT AMERICAN IDOL ON. OTHER THAN THAT, NEITHER OF THEM ARE THAT IMPORTANT TO ME.

I occasionally watch a bit of American Idol. It's on right now in fact, but I've not tuned in for it tonight. Simon Cowell is just as shall we say "up front" on the X-factor too (UK version of American Idol). Sophie

I'll pass on making a fool of myself too. I don't watch either of these shows. I've been watching Rock of Love 2 with Bret Michael's, and I don't know why. Maybe it's like a car wreck.... you just can't look away. That one is all for publicity. Sorry to go off in another direction! Some of these shows are just ridiculous anyway. Great article!
