Apparently, the infamous Westboro Baptist Church has formed plans to protest the funeral of Heath Ledger, due to his role in Brokeback Mountain. While the majority of Americans are surprised about this declaration of intent coming from the members of the Westboro cult, I'm not.

Two years ago, in January 2006, I heard of a planned protest by the Westboro Baptist Church in my town of Evansville, Indiana, for a young soldier recently killed in Iraq named PFC Jonathan Pfender. Since I am the daughter of a permanently disabled Vietnam combat veteran and Purple Heart recipient, and also a military member and a military spouse, the actions of this 'church' cut me to the heart. So, when I found the Patriot Guard Riders online, and saw that they planned to stand between PFC Pfender's family and the Westboro cult, I signed up immediately. I then attended the mission for PFC Pfender and helped shield his family from the members of the WBC.

Signing up with the Patriot Guard Riders was one of the best things I have ever done. After the mission for PFC Pfender, I have been blessed to be able to participate in over 30 missions in the last two years, when real-life and my military duties permit me to do so. In addition to funeral missions, I have participated in send-off missions for those service members deploying overseas, and welcome-home missions for returning service members.

Take comfort in the fact that you don't understand - that means you are still sane. :-)

I'm not sure I understand. They protest at funerals because the people who die are "enabling the homosexual lifestyle"? Everyone who dies is "enabling the homosexual lifestyle"? Unless I'm mistaken, everyone will eventually die. I believe that includes the WBC members. Or are they planning on avoiding death by being caught up in the Rapture? Yeah, maybe that's it!

Great job on bringing this to light. This cult's behavior is atrocious.

I applaude your efforts, I am a Vietnam Era Veteran and appreciate what you are doing. As far as those people, I am a Christian, and I am discusted by their behavior. Jesus loved and accepted evryone, even his enemies. These people are giving Loving Chriatians a bad name. SHAME on them!

You are right to call it a Cult. They are all a bunch of nutcases! they truly are. They are among the most hateful, venomous, psychopathic people on earth

Yes, they do. I plan to write a more in-depth piece about these fools when I get time. So many people do NOT realize that the WBCult is NOT a real Baptist organization. I'm a Nazarene, but I don't like to see my Baptist brothers and sisters be affiliated with this craziness.

These people are just sick. I'm glad you pointed out they are not really Baptists, because they sure do give Baptists a bad name.

This absolutely infuriates me.
