Ten Reasons Why You Should Not Buy Satellite Internet Service

Satellite Internet Service is Ridiculous

For some users living in areas with limited broadband services, Satellite may be their only choice. A service called HughesNet (used to be called “DirecWay”) provides satellite Internet service that is received through a dish installed on the roof of a user’s home. For
some of you, this may sound like a good idea, but be forewarned… it is perhaps one of the worst decisions you’ll ever make. A couple years ago, my family wanted high speed Internet and there was no cable or DSL services available in our area in the suburbs of Chicago. We were desperate for speed, and getting sick of using dial-up. We ordered Satellite Internet from DirecTV and although we got our high speed Internet, it was not without a price – no pun intended. We had many problems with it. I’m writing this article here to share with you why it was such a hassle. Here are ten reasons why ordering satellite Internet service for your home is not a good idea…

1. Expensive – Why pay as much for satellite Internet service as you would for other broadband options that are a lot better?

2. The dish - It’s satellite Internet, so you need to get a dish installed JUST to use the Internet. The setup fee is $150 - $225. Already have satellite TV? Well, you’ll need another one right next to it. What a great way to show off to the neighbors, huh? Yea right.

3. Technical Support – It’s decent at best, but every time I called in to fix a problem with satellite Internet (which was every other day) they would tell me something completely different. One day they’ll tell you to configure your network settings a certain way, the next they’ll tell you to reset the settings, then finally you call in and they tell you the feature is not supported or compatible with their service.

HughesNet is absolutely , positively horribly. 0.5 second ping is an outright lie, I can't get any faster than 3 seconds and online gaming is a constant disconnection. Don't get it if you want to play online poker. IT WILL FAIL MISERABLY

I totally disagree with most of you. I have used hughes for 4 years now and I have certain issues but what do you expect form something that goes to space and back? Of course the weather is going to interfere. For those of you that complain about that it is nothing but ignorant and spoiled. How can something that goes through the air be better then something that goes through a cable.I am a business owner and use it for my business. You say go back to dial up where I live there is no dial up. I live off solar power as there is no hydro service either. I have no phone system either so I use voip with my hughes satellite service. I have the large dish and a business package. I run mulitple video streams everyday, and I am never subject to fap. As far as I am concerned it is a progressive technology. It will get better with time. But in the meantime for those of us that have no other choice then it is a wonderful alternative and a great service.

I have used this service for several years. While it does have occasional problems, it is not nearly as bad as described in the article (consider: if it were as bad as he says, the company wouldn't last very long...). If you like online gaming or if you commonly do large downloads, this service probably isn't for you. But if you live off-grid, and beyond the reach of more conventional services (like I do), this option is completely acceptable. It is entirely possible that Matt simply had a bad experience. My advice: Look into all your options before you start, and if Sat. Internet seems like the best... Go for it!

I had to get HughesNet because I live in an area that does not have DSL and the 2 other wireless companies could either not get a signal (I am 1/8 of a mile from the tower) or were going to charge me $1800 to install. I guess I am lucky; so far I have not encountered any of the problems told about. It is storming as I type this. I do have a question I really need answered--Can my neighbors (or anyone pull up in the area with a laptop)and access through my service? The installer had me put in a password to prevent this, but my step-dad is swearing up and down that anybody and everybody can pirate my service. Can anyone give me the straight poop?

Direcway/Hughes whatever is so bad that at times I wish I had dial-up. Right now it is going unbearably slow. Too be honest everytime I start up firefox I want to shoot myself. The Second DSL or Cable is in the area I'm taking a chainsaw to the dish. It is unnatural to enjoy this service and I highly recommend that you stay as far away from Direcway as possible.

What if you live out in the middle of nowhere? I rather have Satellite than Dial Up.
