Have you ever had a dog that was so very special he was still in your mind years after the dog died? Losing a pet can be devastating and can effect you forever. Paulie was my very special friend, we did everything we could together. He died almost twenty years ago yet I still find times when he comes up in conversation like it was just yesterday that he left. He is still in my dreams, and sometimes I feel he is still following me around. He was like my shadow in life yet I can't say I owned him it was more like he owned me.

I had Paulie's mother, so I became close friends with Paulie the day he was born. He was a short haired liver and white pup with an enormous heart. He reminded me of my Uncle Paul so I named him after my Uncle Paul. Paulie had eleven brothers and sisters that were black and white and one sister that was all liver colored. The family was integrated. Paulie attached himself too me the moment he learned to walk and he followed me for long distances. he had a hard time keeping up so I usually ended up carrying him after awhile. Paulie was slow yet eager.

We never knew who Paulies father was but he must have been a super fellow since Paulie was so great. We thought maybe Paulies father was a basset hound because Paulie had short fat legs and long ears. Paulies mother was a German Shorthair with long thin legs and shorter ears.

As Paulie became an adolescent he discovered that he liked girls. He had a girlfriend down the road and he would sneak out and see her when ever he could. It wasn't hard for Paulie to sneak out of the house since he learned how to open the door by himself. Paulies girlfriend's people did not approve of Paulie so they would call the police on him. Fortunately for Paulie he made close friends with the police department and instead of getting a free ride to the pound the officer would give Paulie a ride home. Paulie really enjoyed his time with the officers who gave him rides home. Paulie was on the lazy side and he thought it was a long walk home. Paulie was the kind of guy that everyone liked, except his girlfriends people.

Losing a pet is hard. I'm happy you still think of him. Paulie would be happy to know that too.

Paulie sounds like a wonderful pet. Your writing about him brings him to life for the readers. I can really imagine him getting a ride home in the police car.
