If you enjoy children and have a knack for the theatrical, you can start a children's party business as a storyteller and weaver of fairy tales. This unique children's business is tailor made for a mom who wants to run a business that has flexible hours. Plus, this business has very low start-up costs and minimal overhead making it a relatively low risk children's business.

First, you will need to select a group of favorite fairy tales which you can read and reenact with the children who attend your parties. For an all girl's party, Cinderella, Snow White, or Goldilocks and the Three Bears would be good fairy tale selections. Once you're familiar with the fairy tales you've chosen, locate appropriate costumes that will allow you to dress up as the main character to further bring the story to life. Components for your costumes can be found at thrift stores, vintage clothing stores, and estate sales. Spend some time rehearsing the stories along with your reenactments until you feel comfortable performing the stories in front of a group of children. At the parties, you'll want to consider allowing the children to participate in the story. For example, you could be Cinderella and recruit some of the children to be the dwarfs.

Once you feel comfortable acting out the fairy tales, you'll want to prepare suitable advertising for your unique children's party business. Start with some well designed flyers and a website describing your services. Include color photos of yourself dressed in costume on your website and on your flyers. Place your ads on bulletin boards throughout your local area. You can then contact markets that look promising for your children's party services. Good sources to contact include child care centers, book stores, schools, and local libraries. You'll also want to emphasize that you do private parties for children for special events such as birthdays. If you have a party supply store or children's toy or book store in your area, you may be able to co-market with them.

If I had the time, this is something I would love to do! Creative idea. Kids love to get involved in stories. I have a friend who dresses up like Mother Goose for birthday parties . . . little ones love it. I'll bet libraries would pay for this kind of program, too.
