In days gone by, most people would have defined themselves either as on the left (liberal) or on the right (conservative). Increasingly, these days, many take a Centrist position, with bits and pieces from either side of the political spectrum. And while there’s that small extreme hardcore group that we all fear and dread, few know about the Libertarian option.

Libertarian Party policies are no different to the policies of any other political party. Yet the way they deal with them, and the solutions they offer, are far more workable in that they take human nature into consideration, and offer optimal solutions for humanity. Their creed if firmly based in the belief that all human beings are able to live their lives in the best way possible, if they are given the freedom to make those decisions without interference from government.

Take, for instance, the growing divide between the rich and the poor. It’s no longer the poor that are getting poorer. The middles classes are getting poorer as well. Government on both sides of the current political spectrum throw money at various programs to give the poor an opportunity to learn skills that will enable them to work for big business. Libertarians, on the other hand, simply wish to deregulate. No more licenses that would hamper a single mom from setting up her own small business in selling baked bread from home. Business is not difficult. Mankind has been trading for as long as it’s been around. It is excessive and unnecessary legislation that stops ordinary individuals from offering their unique skills and products for sale.

Other Libertarian policies include ending the war on drugs. Virtually all Americans have, at one time or another, taken recreational drugs. In schools and Universities, they are freely available. The laws have not stopped their popularity and it is unlikely that they ever will. The reason is simple. There is a demand for them. Far better to allow them to be legal and stop wasting the long arm of the law; the law has got better things to do.

Marijuana is not legal in the Netherlands. Cops simply look the other way for the most part because it's not a threat to personal or public safety. You are right about it being stable there though.

Dear Republican. You missed something. People ARE on drugs! :) Something else you missed - The Dutch have had legalised marijana for decades. Their society is one of the most stable in the world.

As a Libertarian, I think you've done a good job of describing some key points. Thanks.
