If something is legal does it make it morally right? NO! Is partial-birth abortion morally right? Is abortion even morally right? It is legal, at least abortion is legal but is it moral? Many will disagree with me on this issue. It is only an example.

A local cop was having sex with a 16-year-old girl here in Goshen, Indiana. He lost his job but then was reinstated because it is legal in the state of Indiana to have sex with a 16-year-old girl. Does that make it morally right or acceptable?

We should hold our authority figures to a higher standard. If a Dr. or a teacher had sex with a patient or student who was 16 years old we would be in an uproar.I know I would be in an uproar. I am interested in what others think. I am in disagreement with a fellow AC writer on this issue. It is easy for someone who doesn't have children to not see this as important. I have children and I would like to see this police officer pay consequences for this. If a law is not moral maybe it should be changed. If it is legal to have sex with a 16-year-old then that law should be changed if it is an adult having sex with a teenager. If it is another teenager that is different.

There are many things that are legal but are they moral? Is it moral to sue McDonald's for burning yourself on coffee because you don't have enough sense to check it before you drink it? Is it moral for a lawyer to help someone sue for millions of dollars over something that is your own stupid fault?

I hope that I am not the only one who sees this kind of sexual conduct as unacceptable. Mr. Yoder has actually resigned and I hope it stays that way. Shame on him! This is completely unacceptable. I would like your opinions.

Takeaways
  • Is something morally right just because it is legal?
  • We should expect our authority figures to be held up to a higher standard.
  • If a doctor had sex with a 16-year-old we would be in an uproar.
Did You Know?
Many people think that just because something is legal it is morally acceptable.

Thought provoking article but you made no mention if he was coercing her to have sex with him because of his position. Did he blackmail her or promise her favors or let her get away with anything. If so, I think that would change the dynamic.

I think the legal age should be 16 in every state. A girl that age knows exactly what she is doing.

This shouldn't be legal.

This story is just disgusting. The cop needs to be punished.

According to the paper he had been keeping a watch on her and going to the restaurant where she worked for over the past year, until she was legal age, knew the mother and of her past history with being involved in a sexual abuse case, so he was aware of what he was doing. He had sex with her in a park and several other "high class" places. Pervert! Thanks for your comments.

Great reporting on this. I had a policeman (who responded to the accident that I had just been in) drive me around in his car for over three hours once when I was 17. He kept asking me if I liked men in uniforms. etc.. It was only by the grace of God that nothing happened. It would have been my word against his. I would imagine that this sort of thing happens more than we could possibly imagine. Thank you for sharing this.

What the?? Absolutely gross and insane! This guy shouldnt only have his badge ripped away but also be locked up for child molestation. Who makes these laws? Crazy. Well what will happen next when he gets called out to a rowdy situation at a sweet 16 birthday party, will he be at the door waiting to get his hands on those teens? Im sure he will make sure to give a full body search to other innocent girls. What a creep. Thanks for reporting!

I don't think it's moral, and it definitely shouldn't be legal. I can't believe it isn't illegal! I thought a child had to be 18 to be considered of legal age? What a sick world we live in. I don't know how any adult, especially someone who should be setting examples for others, could take advantage of a child like that, and yes, a 16 year old is still a child - even though they are fully developed. They aren't adults! I wonder how he would feel if a 40 year old man had sex with his 16 year old daughter or sister? It's too bad some people don't have a conscience. What a disgusting pervert! Only someone with the mentality of a low-life pervert would think this is okay. By the way - I don't give a rat's @$$ who this offends.

This is a very sad situation. I do think the age of consent should be raised, and in this case, as Donna points out so well, the fact that it was a cop, who could have used very subtle coercion, makes it all the worse. Police officers should be held to a higher standard, IMO, if they are to enforce the law. This girl may not have felt that she could say no. Really sad. I may disagree with you on other things that are legal that I personally do not find immoral, but I'm with you on this one.

I certainly agree that what is moral and legal is not necesarily, if even often, interchangible. Without knowing the case, it should be legally wrong if an authority figure takes advantage of another and additionally so if the person is a minor (by standard definition < 18). If this was consenting and legal then maybe Indiana needs to re-evaluate their laws here... even from a less than moral perspective, a 16 y.o. may look and act like an adult, but is not an adult and should have additional protections by law. Yes, laws are abused, but a higher age of consent seems the lesser of two evils.

The guy is 30 and the girl had already been molested in a previous case by a teacher that was convicted. So she was already groomed and had no self esteem.

If the policeman was 18 to 21 it wouldn't be as outrageous as if he were 40. I think that most 16 year old girls these days are well aware of what they are doing. If concensual, and since it is legal in the State, I think there are bigger crimes going on. Good article though.
