There's plenty to do in Atlanta to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Atlanta has a strong Irish heritage. Many Irishmen helped build Atlanta by establishing businesses, trades, and farms in the area. At a time when other cities and states restricted Irish immigration and settlement, Atlanta welcomed the Irish. You've probably heard of one of Atlanta's most famous Irish descendents, Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone with the Wind.

In Atlanta, St. Patrick's Day has always been a day of celebration and festivities for the citizens of Irish heritage. The grand celebrations in Atlanta share the rich culture, heritage and spirit of the Irish to Atlanta's citizens of every nationality, ethnicity, and race.

St. Patrick's Day is Monday, March 17. Many St. Patrick's Day family events and activities will take place the weekend of Saturday, March 15 and Sunday, March 16.

Atlanta St. Patrick's Day Parade
No matter what your plans for the rest of the day, don't miss the 150th anniversary of Atlanta's St. Patrick's Day Parade. It is Atlanta's 127th parade in 150 years. Organizers say this parade will be the biggest and best attended parade since the first St. Patrick's Day Parade 150 years ago.

This year's parade will feature over two hundred parade units including traditional Irish Bagpipes and Drum Corps, floats, bands, military, antique cars, dogs, horses, and more. This year's Honorary Marshal is Atlanta's Mayor Shirley Franklin. She will be joined by other Atlanta dignitaries and dignitaries from Ireland, as well.

The parade will begin at Ralph McGill Boulevard and Peachtree Street and end at Martin Luther King Boulevard at Underground Atlanta. Cross streets include Baker, Harris, International Drive, Ellis, Margaret Mitchell, JW Dobbs, Luckie, Auburn Avenue, Poplar, Walton, and Edgewood. The parade will pass Woodruff Park and turn left on Decatur, right on Pryor, pass through three blocks of Underground to Martin Luther King.

I didn't know that Atlanta had such a strong connection to Ireland. There are certainly a lot of events planned for St. Patrick's Day. Sophie
