When a child within the Autism Spectrum goes to school, it is often a continuous struggle for success. Consistent failure in their classes when many of their neuro-typical peers are excelling at the same time, can be quite damaging for their self-esteem. The following are proven methods for helping your ASD child to succeed in school and in life.Make transitions in slow motion. Changes in routine are generally quite difficult for children with ASD. This is simply one of the characteristics of autism, so taking things slow in order to make things smooth is very beneficial and comfortable for the child. Often, as a result, an ASD child will become very used to a specific task within their routine, making it very traumatic for them to move on to something different. In order to ease the transition, give these children a verbal cue at a specific time interval before it is time to change tasks, such as perhaps ten minutes beforehand, you may say casually to the entire class, thus, making it inconspicuous, "in ten minutes we will be switching from multiplication to long division." This will give the ASD child a feeling of inclusion and at the same time, the other children in the class will have no idea that this was done specifically for the autistic child. The result will be that the ASD child will feel that they are keeping up with the class, and the children who are not ASD will not feel that the ASD child is learning any differently than themselves.
