Here in America, there is no such thing as a "cheap city". But travel outside of our borders, and you are bound to find Meccas of wealth, with the dollar in your favor, that is. Believe it or not, there is such thing as $5 a night at a hotel. Following are the cheapest countries on our planet, according to CNN.com.

5. Pakistan - Though politically unstable, the weak Pakistani Rupee favors the American Dollar, making some things unbelievably cheap. Things such as petrol and meals in restaurants may be equal or more expensive than its American counterpart, but what really makes Pakistan cheap is its real estate. A 4 bedroom house with running water in the urban center of Karachi will only set you back $33,000. Now that's a jaw-dropper.

4. Philippines - 200,000 Americans living in this Asian country cannot be wrong. A taxi ride for about a mile will cost you 20 cents while a haircut will be a whooping 80 cents. The cost of a live in maid for a month? $45. Tuition at a local university for a semester will only cost you a mere $250. The Filipino people all speak perfect English, making the Philippines not only the cheapest country in Asia, but also the most appealing to Americans for it being the only Christian, English-Speaking, tropical Asian nation.

3. Argentina - Recently, Argentina has dropped dramatically in the rankings from being one of the costliest countries in the world to one of the most affordable, due to economic crisis that has plagued this South American nation. Leather goods such as jackets and purses are approximately half of what they cost in the States. A movie ticket? $4. Although real estate may not be as cheap as in the Philippines or Pakistan, the amazingly affordable food and services make up for it.

2. Zimbabwe - Not much is known about this mysterious African country, but that its goods are relatively cheap, thanks to having the world's highest inflation rate at 1,000%. Recently, real estate prices have skyrocketed, but the rapidly dropping value of the Zimbabwean currency balances out. A liter of milk = .84 cents; a kilogram of beef is approximately .60 cents.

Manny Mac you might think he is a racist. But most will think your just stupid. Ive been to Iraq and its a lovely place with GOOD people. No better or worse than the UK or the USA. You need to stop watching junk TV etc and find out what is going on in this world. The USA and in some ways the UK to have torture etc going on. They just do it (Or "contract" it out ) in different countries like Sri lanka etc . Right now if you asked every one in the world who they regard as the biggest Danger to world peace etc they will tell you "USA Government"

wow..here in the Philippines(i live in Philippines)....2,200 pesos is already very big to us!!!!!!!!!!its like 5 persons!..........maybe,compared to ur country it is only cheap, but here in the Philippines, people are always complaining of high price!..many people die bcoz of famine here...our rice before only costs 20-35 pesos, NOW it costs 48-50 pesos or 1$!!!for us,its a very big price!!!!!!VERY!!!..and bcoz of that people line up in the evening and sleep on the streets so that when morning comes, they will be the first to buy cheap, limited NFA rice for only 18 pesos!...the salary here is very cheap!for example..ur a nurse, here in the phil ur salary is only 20 thousand pesos,,compared to other country..100 thousand pesos! well, im only saying the poor side of the Phil...there are a lot more beautiful things in the Philippines!!!!!!!!!!! like tourist attractions..etc... btw... thanks

I can vouch for The Philippines. On my first day in Manila, My friend and I drank heavily for 12 hours, had two meals each and got a bill for 2200 pesos. I thought that was just my part of the bill, but apparently it was for us both. 27:50USD for a whole days drinking for two people is a snip. My hotel cost just over 18 bucks and was air conditioned and clean. Taxis are so cheap I cannot even bring myself to tell you. And should you want one, a very friendly lady in one of the bars will set you back about 44USD and won't steal your currency in the morning! Thailand blows.

You guys below me are dumb as fuck. Ever heard of Paraguay? Yeah, it's the one mentioned in the article. They never said a thing about Uruguay. Those are tow completely different countries. Sheesh.

Oh - I forgot. Where in Uruguay can you stay for Five dollars? Bunkum. Average hotel costs anything upwards of USD 50. More in places like Colonia. Montevideo, however is much cleaner than Karachchi , or any other asian city thats mentioned in the article. I get the impression that most travel writers have never set foot in the countries they write about.

Why are these countries so cheap? What about cleanliness, courtesy and conveniences? I have been to Uruguay, Mexico and Argentina. I wouldn't want to live in any of those places. Uruguay is sleepy. Taxi drivers are dangerous. Argentina is crumbling but if you like eating steaks all day it's a good place. Mexico is dangerous- all kinds of police in various uniforms are everywhere - must be for a reason. For conveniences good standards, good housing , style and sophistication- Western Cape, South Africa is hard to beat.

Joachim you are a RACIST. Why do you live in Iraq? You are not welcome in the USA.

USA is getting cheaper every day, because of the awful economy politics done there (what makes the Euro strong against the Dollar). If you dont mind living in a county, where torture is acceptable from the goverment, go to the US.

I was quite surprised at what emerged on this list...and the countries listed don't seem like bad spots on the globe. Great photos and a very interesting article! We used to live in southern Italy, very cheaply. But the Euro really changed things over there. Thanks for an illuminating article! Well researched and super information... Kim

I live in Thailand. My rent in my serviced apartment with maid service and cable TV costs me around $250 a month (depending on US dollar exchange rate). A room in a clean hotel is about $12 a night, beer is $1 a bottle, and dinner at a food stall is 60 cents. Steak and salad would run you about $3.50. Oh and taxis are $1.25 for an average trip. I love it here!!!
