The NFL offseason has officially begun. The new season will be upon us before you know it. Every team will be doing everything they can to improve their team and make their own run at a Super Bowl in the next year. Taking a look at the Tennessee Titans, their are noticable strengths and weaknesses. The wide receiver position is probably the most interesting position to look at when examining this team. The Titans made the playoffs despite having one of the worst offenses in the league. Quarterback Vince Young had less than 10 touchdown passes for the entire season. Their was an obvious need for more touchdowns. Many fans and critics pointed to the wide receiver position as the position that needed the most improvement. New Offensive Coordinator Mike Heimedeiger is known for his ability to help a team score points. But without weapons to to use it will be very difficult.
When you look at the current roster of Titan receivers there are a few bright spots. The Titans acquired Justin Gage from the Chicago Bears over the offseason. His play this year, while not perfect, was certainly solid. He appeared to be a favorite target for quarterback Vince Young. He had a number of good catches this year. The Titans would be smart to keep him on their team, as he would be a solid second or third receiver. Roydell Williams was also a bright spot for the Titans this year. Williams appear to come on more as the season progressed. His season ending injury hurt the Titans as they moved into the playoffs. He is another player the Titans should consider keeping as he will continue to get better.
Other than Gage and Williams there is not much to get excited about. The Titans are clearly in need of a #1 receiver. Brandon Williams has been inconsistent at this position in the last two years. There are a number of key rookies that could one day blossom such as Paul Williams are Byron Ealy. The fact remains though, the Titans need a number one receiver now! They need someone with speed that can stretch opposing defenses.
