Gordon B. Hinckley, 15th president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away in his Salt Lake apartment at 7:00PM on January 17, 2008 from natural causes. He was 97 years old.

Gordon B. Hinckley was the oldest person to run The Church of Latter-day Saints. Hinckley was a man who had a quirky personality and a smile for everyone. President Hinckley lead The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for twelve years. Under his direction more LDS temples were built than under the direction of any other LDS leader.

Hinckley was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Marjorie Pay Hinckley who passed away in April 2004.

The new leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has not yet been chosen. The quorum of twelve apostles will make their decision some time after President Hinckley's funeral (which has yet to be scheduled).

Some few people really understand the Mormon Church or how it functions.

I posted this within moments of being told by a friend who was notified by txt message from her daughter who was at a church meeting on Sunday at BYU when they got the official news. This was delayed by AC, I am unsure why. I had hoped to post here instead of having to contact all of my friends/family to let them know (the fastest way to get info to a large group is to post it in a public area). Unfortunately the info didn't get to them as soon as I had hoped, but that is ok too. I have a more personal piece that I'll share shortly. If I was older Gordon B Hinckley was a man I could see me having a crush on! He was such a sweet man, he had a lively personality and a great sense of humor. He was known as "the people's prophet" for good reason!

Thanks Sharon! I saw a call for content about President Hinckley that I think I'll answer. While I will miss President Hinckley I know that he was finished with his job here and he was ready to be reuinited with his wife. After nearly 70 years of marriage it was hard on him being single and going on without her. I look forward to the day in the (distant) future that we all will be reunited.

Latter-day Saints develop a love for prophet and president that is seldom rivaled. Like Tamee, I heard about the news at least one hour before the major news bureaus or the official LDS site had posted the news. I heard the news in much the way that Tamee did. Those who loved and were near Gordon B. Hinckley when he left this sphere called someone else who loved him who called someone else who loved him and so on and so forth. My daughter called me from Provo. I did not need to verify my source - I knew he was gone. I am grateful that Tamee posted the news where I can say that I will miss him.

My sympathy. I've had the opportunity to work with many people in the LDS in SLC and Evanston WY and I know he was a beloved leader. Fast reporting
