Rooster is wildly loved in China. Most of the farm people have roosters. Usually no Chinese will eat rooster, because rooster is the head of the chicken family, and also the meat of rooster is rough and hard. Hen meat is much tastier.

To most of the people, it is impossible to relate human beings¡¦ characters to the characters of animals. For sure nobody would like to compare himself or herself with an animal. However, according to the Chinese traditional folk stories and the Chinese calendar (the lunar calendar), all human beings are born under the influence of the Zodiac. There are 12 animals on the Chinese Zodiac. Every animal has his unique characters and whoever is born in the year of that animal will have the same kind of characters. I am not sure about the truth of such theory. However, I do find some animals¡¦ characters in every person that I know. Yes, under certain situation, we, as human beings will demonstrate some animal nature and desire.

It said that the character of the person who is born in the year of the Rooster is very hard working, love knowledge, smart, pioneer in spirit and strong willed, but eccentric and selfish. The ¡§Rooster people¡¨ can get alone with people who are born in the year of the Snake and the year of the Ox, but do not have good relationship with ¡§Rabbit people¡¨.

2017 will be the year of the Rooster. These years are the year of the Rooster: 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017, 2029, I do not know the date for the New Year¡¦s Day for the year of the Rooster yet, but it is between Jan. 21 to Feb.19 on the Western calendar. Not every New Year¡¦s Day is on the same date.

Both the Western and traditional Chinese calendars are used in all Asian countries. But people use the lunar calendar only to set the dates for traditional festivals. I celebrate the Western New Year and the Chinese New Year. There are many Chinese traditional celebrations here in America. Especially in California, every year we have big parade, Chinese New Year Art Exhibition and the Asian American Expo.
