Places to Take Kids in "The Valley" of Pennsylvania and New York
On a sunny day, there is nothing better to do than spend some time outside with your children. If you live in the area of Athens, Sayre or South Waverly, Pennsylvania, and Waverly, New York, here's some places you might like to visit.
Valley Playland is located in Athens on River Front Drive. This large park features slides, swings, a toddler area, picnic tables, basket ball court, baseball field and a tennis court. Built in 1993 this park a provided a nice sturdy place for children to play for
the last 15 years. The park is open during the warmer months from dawn until dusk.
A few miles away is Round Top Park, located off Wolcott Hollow road on Round Top road. This park is located on the top of the beautiful Appalachian Mountains. Round Top Park features large pavilions, grills, and lots of space to run around. There are trails to walk as well as play equipment for the children. A personal favorite of mine from my childhood is the large merry-go-round, one of the only ones in the area.
Down in Sayre on River Front road is River Front Park. River Front park features again trails to walk, the Gargantuan Greenway, large space to run around in, and a small set of swings. This would be the perfect place for a quiet picnic right in town so grab a blanket and bring your picnic basket. This park also has a boat landing which leads into the Susquanna River.
Next to the Robert Packer hospital in Sayre is the Sayre Pond. There are actually two ponds right the middle of town separated by Lockhart Street. One Pond features a nice fountain that sprays high in the air during the warmer months. The other pond features a deck with a lot of sitting room. Both ponds feature ducks and benches so you can sit and watch the ducks but please do not feed them. You might even get lucky and see a turtle or some fish in the water.
