What Union is This Guy Talking About Anyway?!

George W. Bush delivered his 2008 State of the Union Address tonight. I'm not sure what Union he was talking about. Maybe it was the Writer's Guild of America. If he was, in fact, referring to that 50-state union we all know and love, I'm not sure what criteria he used to come up with his picture of a happy and progressive "state."

For that matter, he never even explicitly told us what the state of our Union was! At the very end of the speech, he gave us only a conditional assessment: if we do all of the things he's suggested, our country will "remain strong.

So what are these conditions? Mostly, it's the same crap he's been pushing since the beginning of the third millenium.

Toward the beginning of his speech, he urged Congress and the American people to "Ban the buying, selling, or cloning of human life." As if moral bickering over medical research methods is the biggest problem with this union's state in 2008.

He went on to tell us that, "We must trust in the wisdom of our founders, and empower judges who understand that the Constitution means what it says." This is great advice. But again, what union is he talking about? In our American Union, Bush has had a penchant for empowering judges who take pride in "creative" interpretations of the Constitution. (And that's only when they're not downright ignoring the existence of the Constitution.)

Wasn't it George Bush himself who reportedly called the Constitution "just a [expletive deleted] piece of paper" a few years ago? Inconsistency in a politician's views?! Unbelievable, isn't it?

Mr. President also let us know that "The armies of compassion continue their march to a new day in the Gulf Coast." That's great, but wasn't Katrina about three years ago already? If I was president (and, obviously, I should be) I'd be embarrassed as hell over the fact that these "armies of compassion" are still even necessary three years after a natural disaster. The fact that these volunteer "armies" are still needed in New Orleans only highlights the fact that Bush and his regime did absolutely nothing to help.

Oh, Bush's "speech"...totally uninspiring as usual, more of the same, expected, and very predictable.

I agree with you about the state of strength of the American people. We're far too distracted by gadgets, celebrity and greed to make real, effective change. Great article Trent...one of many.

Why do we continue to give this numbskull valuable airtime to tell us absolutely nothing? The only thing I can agree with is that he postponed his speech until tonight. i would've preferred if he'd not given it at all.
