Duplicating the dazed victims wandering an ashen street is a fairly unmistakable comparison considering the movie takes place in New York as well. While this may seem harsh those who have seen the movie would agree. But this is not the only fault I find with pretty much the entire film.
The most overlooked and crucial aspect of a movie beyond the characters and their ability to portray the story is the camera work. In Cloverfield, the camera work barely surpassed the quality of acting supplied for the first time starts. So this makes it a double looser in both major necessities of a film.
Between Michael Stahl-David, as the male-lead actor, having a Romeo-and-Juliet breakdown and the supporting cast being completely without direction, there is still an amazing 9 hour life on the camera battery.
'Without direction' is not to describe the acting alone. With a writer such as J.J. Abrams in control, the theme from 'Lost' has carried over. Having the audience utterly confused seems to be his new trademark.
Cloverfield as a whole was a mental strain. This film was fueled entirely by computer generated images (CGI) that is of decent quality. The 'creatures' depicted were well done, in that they supplied an adequate amount of suspense, gore and terror, to keep the audience wanting a more violent attack than the last.
In the end, this was a confusion of a tragic-event turned love story precluding the destruction of a most civilized area of the east coast, New York City.
The conclusion of the movie was a great disappointment, except the fact that the movie was over. An extended ending, a few minutes into the credits, were rumored to have occurred. However, the angst of the angry mob, called an audience, was already demanding a refund.
