Tiger, Tiger!
Lesson Plan: ArtGrade Level: 3rd grade
Materials Needed:
“Tiger, Tiger” by Dee Lillegard and illstated by Susan Guevara
Chalk
Paper
Pencil
Intelligences:
Interpersonal- discussing what kind of animal they would want to spend the day with
Intrapersonal- imagining spending a day with an animal and deciding what animal they would want to spend the day
Visual- discussing the illustrations and looking at the pictures to see how chalk was used
Naturalistic- discussing different kinds of animals, specifically the Tiger
Arts:
Art- creating a chalk drawing
Literature- reading the book “Tiger, Tiger”
Science- learning facts about the tiger
Objectives:
1. The students will be able to create a chalk drawing based on prompting from the illustrations and knowledge gained from the teacher about chalk drawings.
2. Students will be able to list facts about the Tiger based on knowledge they have gained from the lesson.
Standard:
1. Understanding and applying media techniques and processes (chalk processes)
2. Using knowledge of structures and functions (talk about color and picture layout)
3. Choosing and evaluating a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas
Anticipatory Set/Seed Strategies:
Use a riddle about tigers to give the students background information related to tigers. This will lead into the piece of literature for the day and get the students exceited about what they are going to read. Some of the clues include:
- I live in Asia
- I like to swim
- I am an endangered species
- I live in the jungle
- I eat meat
- I am orange and black
- I am a big cat
Teaching Presentation:
1. The students will listen to the teacher read the book “Tiger, Tiger”
2. The students will discuss the illustrations and talk about chalk drawings
3. The students will look at how they use color to create a mood. They will talk about what emotion they feel when they see different colors.
