In what has become the online equivalent of schoolyard bullies ganging up on one child, "search engine bombing," also known as "Googlebombing" or "linkbombing," has become a popular way of making a political statement on the Internet.

Dropping the Googlebomb

Basically, a Googlebomb links certain derogatory or inflammatory keywords to a webpage. For example, the anonymous folks who hate my writing on Associated Content (of which there are many) could create hyperlinks on their blogs that link the phrase "hack writer" to my Content Producer page on this site.

Thanks to the viral nature of the Internet, planting a search engine bomb like this is deceptively easy, as witnessed by the recent bombing of the Church of Scientology. If the original bomber can get enough bloggers to create the same link on their websites and blogs, the bomb is then armed and ready.

Tripping the Linkbomb

If there are a sufficient number of links to a site, it should appear as the first entry on a Google page once the keywords are entered. In the Scientology example, when the keywords "dangerous cult" are entered into the Google search engine, the first entry on the first page is a link to the Church's homepage.

It's also possible to set off what I will call a "suicide bomb" on your personal sites. Websites thrive from Internet traffic and, by strategically placing a Googlebomb with the help of thousands of your online buddies, you can increase page hits dramatically depending on the keywords you choose. It is, of course, a deceptive way of routing traffic to your site, but it is successful in many cases.

Notable Search Engine Bombs

The Church of Scientology is the latest well-known target of linkbombers. Other notable victims include the following:

"More Evil than Satan": Reportedly one of the earliest examples of linkbombing, typing this phrase would send surfers to the Microsoft Home Page. I wonder if they set up this bomb using a Macintosh.

There is not the least google bombing for scientology. The culty pays the ranson of its crimes, that's all. Find out: it is referenced some ç million times on google, and the combination scientology + trials or scientology + justice are there 3 to 400000 times. That's no bombing, that's because scientology has done so much to silence those who see it for what it is that they speak and say what it is.

First of all, Anonymous would like to remind you that we are NOT attacking the BELIEFS of Scientology. We are not saying their beliefs are evil or somehow wrong. In fact, we could care less what you believe. God is a very personal thing, and we know better than to tell people our version of "the truth". Neither are we attacking the FREEDOM OF SPEECH of Scientologists. Any Scientologist is welcome to share his or her views, just as anyone else is. I understand how taking down an organization's website could be misconstrued as an attack on CoS's freedom of speech, but this is simply not the case. The truth is that your rights (including your right to freedom of speech, thought, and religion) END at the moment when they infringe upon someone else's rights. Scientology has a history of a "fair game" policy, attacking anyone who does not agree with them in various ways with their vast resources. They have forced abortions on their members above their private navy, SeaOrg. They have

If people think anonymous are doing this against scientology for the public good, then think again. Anonymous have attacked innocent people and other groups in the past and they are not doing this for any good, they do this for fun or as anonymous would call it (to use their jargon) "lulz". Most who make up anonymous come from websites like 4chan and 711chan. I've been threatened by some members who claimed would revel my private information and use it against me. I wonder after scientology who their next target will be?
