The greatness of the philosophy is seen in the delineation of the qualities of man under three categories. Every man possesses these qualities in different proportions. They determine his behaviour and character. With some persons one quality is dominant and their behaviour reflects this aspect clearly.
We will refer to these three qualities briefly. The first one is called satwic (noble) quality. Men, who are calm, spiritually oriented, eating food in moderation, which will not kindle their base instincts, possess it. They love all living beings and have great compassion. Living a frugal life they help others even at personal inconvenience and sacrifice. They never harm others. They do everything as their duty, never expecting anything in return. It is not always the case that one has this quality to the full measure of 100%. It will be predominant and other qualities known as rajasic and tamasic will also be present in them though in smaller proportions. But such persons with predominantly satwic qualities benefit society. They work for the welfare of all without craving for name and fame.

The second category of persons is called rajasic(energetic). They are full of energy. They love action. For example, the soldiers, businessmen and the politicians belong to this category. They want vigorous activity and work hard to achieve name and fame in society. They produce wealth and build institutions. They have more of rajasic traits and less of satwic and tamasic qualities. They generally eat all types of food including non-vegetarian that give them energy and vitality.

The third category of persons is called tamasic (dull). They are dull, having no aim in life except eating, sleeping and merry making without striving hard to earn or learn. It is not that they are full time idlers. They have the dull or tamasic trait in abundant measure and some small percentage of the other two traits.
