Crohn's disease is a fairly common condition in which a section of the gastrointestinal tract becomes inflamed. It can manifest itself with abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, or weight gain. The infected area of the digestive system is less likely to perform key functions such as the absorption of nutrients or the breaking down of food. This malfunction also allows corrosive salts from bile to be passed down, which will subsequently cause damage to other unaffected parts of the intestinal tract.

Patients suffering from Crohn's disease are likely to become malnourished if they do not find foods that are capable of being easily digested in their damaged small intestines. Improperly broken down foods can disrupt the function of the large intestine, causing severe diarrhea and dehydration.

Not only are people with Crohn's disease less likely to be metabolizing the nutrients they need, but they are not absorbing the necessary vitamins and minerals necessary to maintain a normal level of energy. This cycle of too little nutrition often leaves sufferers malnourished and weak.

The right foods will first aid in raising the body's defenses against painful flare-ups. Certain foods can be more easily absorbed by the small intestine, even while it is not working to its full capacity. Protein found in lean chicken and fish will aid in reducing fatigue and will help the body rebuild muscle mass.

Those with Chron's disease should try to avoid foods that are very high in fiber. Corn, seeds, and nuts are difficult for the small intestine to digest, even when it is functioning normally. These foods can also irritate the large intestine and lead to diarrhea. Try to continue to eat foods lower in fiber to regulate digestion and reduce intestinal cramping.
