Building Up the "Partido Socialista Unido De Venezuela" (PSUV)
I was able to go on a vacation to Venezuela, located in the Northern part of South America. His president, Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias, is known in the US for his constant attacks to President Bush and high-rank government officials (Condoleezza Rice, Dick Cheney, etc).
Venezuela is right now under a so called "process of change towards socialism". Its president is claiming that he is taking charge of the destiny of his country and promoting a true change in his society by changing the way things are done and towards the socialization of the vast
resources that the country has.
In this context he has proposed the creation of a unique political party called "Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela" (United Socialist Party of Venezuela) that will unite all political associations that agree with his basic socialist project. In this PSUV you will find the left, the center, and the right, politically speaking.
Although it may sound strange this type of organization is not new in Latin America. If you look at "el Peronismo" in Argentina you will see that there are lefties, rightist, and moderated centred people all living under the same umbrella of the Partido Peronista. As a matter of fact members of the peronism say "ni de izquierda ni de derecha sino peronista" (Not from the left, not from the right but peronists).
Political experts agree that the main issue with Hugo Chavez's project is the lack of a political entity to confront the challenges that he will face in the future to build a new, socially just, Venezuela. That is why his movement needs to oppose the establishment with a new political mechanism - a party - capable of leading the process.
This year, and while I was there, more than 1600 delegates met in the PSUV's founding congress to debate the program, principles and statutes of this new political instrument. They are mandated to create some sort of "constitution" for this new party.
There are many questions that this foundational congress has to answer, among them
