As gas prices soar, more articles tout the advantages of riding to work on two wheels. Scooters are fun, easy to ride and inexpensive to operate. Scootering is the height of style for many age and status groups. My son is almost 16 years old. He would like to know if he may obtain a motorcycle lerner's permit and ride my scooter ( a registrered, 250 cc highway capable bike). While more people join the scootering crowd, it becomes very important to remember why some should not buy a motorbike.

1.) Scooters, like all motorbikes, are clearly dangerous. When buying a scooter, many friends will show their support of your choice to ride by relating apocryphal tales of friends and relatives who were hurt or died riding. According to the NHTSA, about 3500 riders died in 2003.

2.) While scooters save money, they are not free or even cheap transportation. A new, good quality scooter built to ride at highway speeds will cost four thousand dollars or more. Scooters built to ride with traffic on secondary roads at speeds to 60 mph will cost $2500 and up. New scooters with small 50cc engines will cost about one to three thousand dollars.

Most scooters will require insurance. The cost for insurance varies, check with your broker.

Regular service and parts that wear out may cost the rider hundreds of dollars every year, especially if the rider elects not to provide their own service. For example, an oil change for a car may only cost $30.00; a scooter oil change may cost double that or more.

When buying the bike, do not forget the cost of protective gear. Helmets, armored jackets, heavy leather gloves, boots, and goggles or sunglasses all add to the cost of the bike.

3.) If your significant other is not a rider, they will probably not like the idea. They will view the purchase as a luxury or even as an aggressive or passive aggressive act. It takes an understanding and patient spouse to allow an inanimate object that attracts so much affection into the household.

4.) Professionally, some may question the judgment of a scooterist.

What a retarded article, with BS points. Should of had 5 good points instead of all the fluff.

Hahaha. Reading through your article, I was starting to get irritated, being put into this stereotype box that I did not fit into. But then I got to the end and I was relieved to hear you are a fellow scooter-enthusiast. Bravo, keep on scooting!

I stumbled across this article today and could not help but comment. The first few items on the list are reasonable - various costs associated with scooters, etc. From there, the list takes a downward spiral into hilarious nonsense that literally brought tears of laughter streaming down my face. It almost turns into a persaonal confession of very specific scooter related hardships the author has endured. Number 8 is the kicker for me - you might not want to own a scooter because reports of motorcycle related deaths will cause you feel guilty and depressed, which can only be allieviated by donating to the victims' families - and thats expensive! Add the that to your list of costs, right next to helmet and oil changes.

Thanks for the chuckle. Now I want a scooter more than ever.

Sounds like all those stories about friends/relatives injured or killed on bikes kind of irritate you. Wonder why there are so many of them??? (Guess you don't need to hear about my cousin...)

This article is tongue in cheek. I wrote it for fun. I love scooters and scootering. Andy Long is a serious guy. His course has a reputation for quality as does he. I stand behind what he says. As scooter weather moves into New England, watch out for sand. Ride Safe!

I LOVE my scooter more than anyone should love an inanimate object! I thought the post was funny, and NO I would not let my teen drive one ever!

this article is stupid and is making up excuses...like it takes up time because you watch tv about scooters, its a scooter!! draw unwanted attention...you dont have to talk to them! or becoming the guy that is boring and talks about scootering...only if you make yourself that guy!! its transportation, you dont have to make it your way of life!!!!

Nicely written and discussed. I do feel, however, that it is a bit out-of-date as far as prices are concerned. Some of the new Chinese scooters, particularly the i-scooters are of very reasonable quality and even highway-legal 150cc models are under $1000. This fact makes the return-on-investment much sooner than given here. See the cost breakdown for motorscooters: http://abacus-es.net/motorscooter/economy.html

I'm a certified Motorcycle and Scooter Coach, I've ridden for 35+ years with no accidents. I've trained over 3000 students. My schools have trained over 15,000. That's both motorcycles and scooters. I'd like to be able to diagnose and cure cancer, or solve bipolar disorders. I'm not qualifed or able to stop either, but I am well informed that their are people that are trying. I believe you knew of us, but are failing to mention us... Motorcycle and Scooter Coaches spend countless hours training and continue learning even after they are certifed both nationally and by their respective state. In Texas, you are required from age 15 to 18 to take the Basic RiderCourse by law. A Basic Course will waive the driving portion of the riding test for your license. A license is required even for a 50cc scooter on the street. Somehow you became linked to my site and speading one-sided narratives is in very poor taste, much like tabloid journalism. A skilled rider knows their limit and ri

Scooters are fun.I own three and put on about 6-7 k miles a year.Filling my tank for $4 is just one advantage of owning a scooter. The weather here in florida makes it an all year sport.Staying clear of the crazy drivers is something you always have to be aware of here in florida. It's not for everyone. It seems everytime i let a friend drive one they have a close call.I guess i have 25+ years of riding behind my belt and two motorcycle crashes so i'm aware of more then most.Have fun on two wheels and take a course if you are a new rider.

Scooters as all bikes are plain FUN! Just be smart when you are riding them, they are not toys...

Oh yes, such fond memories of digging pebbles out of knees & elbows ~ But, seriously, in Wes's defense, he's a great driver! Really! And the points in this article are good to just keep in mind out there on the road for anyone on two motorized wheels in America.

I'm "Herstory's" brother, Thanks for looking out for me, always the older sister. A few points: 1) I am an experianced rider both on and off road 2) I'm 42 years old and will not be taking the risks that I did when I was 20 years younger. 3) I live in a rural area, on a BUSY day on the highway I see 25 cars on my 55 mile commute.
