When the groom places the symbol of unending love on his bride's finger, more times than not it is the traditional round diamond that is brilliantly shining. It remains the most popular diamond chosen by brides, and rightly so, since it provides the most brilliance and is the most valuable. But besides the round diamond, many brides also opt for other fashionable shapes: Marquise, Emerald and Oval. Gaining in popular as a diamond alternative, however, are gemstones. Like diamonds, gems such as emeralds, rubies and sapphires are a good choice not only for their beauty, but for their investment value. That's why it's important for couples to learn as much as they can about diamonds and gemstones before purchasing their wedding rings.Diamonds are a big investment. In fact, besides a home, a diamond ring is usually the only other item that goes up in value. So like home buying, bridal couples should take their time and look around. As a rule of thumb, it's best to spend a day visiting at least five jewelers before purchasing your special wedding ring. And because the purchase is so personal and meaningful, many couples decide to pick out the wedding ring together. But if you want the element of surprise on your wedding day, look at the jewelry your fiancé wears on a daily basis or ask someone close to her for insight on her preferred cut and setting type.
When investing in diamonds, remember that the four C's - Cut, Clarity, Color and Carat weight - determine the value of the diamond. With gemstones, it's a grading system developed by the American Gemological Laboratories. The value of the gemstone is based on Color, Tone, Clarity, Proportions/Finish and Average Brilliancy.
