I doubt if Mr. Shakespeare could have written a better script for this sporting event. A last minute touchdown by a Wild Card team that put them in the winner's circle, a bittersweet victory by a quarterback, who had become the whipping post for a hostile hometown press around mid-season, a team that that had not lost in over a year being handed a defeat by another team that is now 11-0 on the road, a victory wildly celebrated by a cellar team that went 1-15, all because this win kept them in the record books as the only undefeated NFL team in history and finally a man, who played for years as quarterback on losing teams, now was able to watch two of his sons win the Super Bowl MVP in successive years. All of these things came to pass last night when Eli Manning hit Plaxico Burress for a TD pass with just 35 seconds remaining in the game and went on to a 17-14 victory.

The end of the reign of the unbeaten Patriots is now being celebrated all across the country, for American sports fan have a knack for cheering the underdog. This victory is especially sweet for those pro football fans in New York and Miami. New Yorkers will be going wild this evening because they have evened the score with their arch rival, Boston. As of late, New York sports teams have been getting the short end of the stick and the athletes from Beantown have been taking home a lot of bacon. Not tonight, as the Giants defense ran through the Patriots like a twister in a cornfield, helping enable a New York victory.

Miami is celebrating almost as much as New York, despite the fact that the Dolphins had only one win all season long. They will party until the wee hours of the morn, because their home team still holds the only perfect season. If the Patriot's season had been one minute shorter they would too have a perfect season, but alas this did not happen..... so close, but yet so far away.

And finally there must be a very grand jubilee taking place at the New Orleans Garden District home of Archie Manning and all around the city by alumni of the Isidore Newman School, the private academy where both Eli and Peyton played their high school football.

Hey, that's some great Sports Illustrated-writing. When the Pats had fourth-down at New York's 32-yeard-line, Mr. Shakespeare may have written, "to kick a field goal or not kick a field goal, that is the question!" -- Mike

As they (used) to say on the playgrounds of America: Cheaters never prosper. 18-1. Heh, heh, heh.
