FDA Warning: Chantrix May Cause Suicidal Thoughts

Cahntrix (Varenicline) is a Prescription Medication Used to Help Patients Stop Smoking

The United States Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Public Health Advisory about the increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors by people taking the smoking-cessation drug varenicline (Chantrix). This warning comes after confirming that 39 suicides have occurred

in patients taking varenicline (Chantrix). Eighty-seven percent of those suicides have occurred in the United States.

More specifically, the FDA is saying that serious neuropsychiatric symptoms have occurred in patients taking Chantix. These include: changes in behavior, agitation, depressed mood, suicidal ideation, and attempted and completed suicide. According to the data analyzed by the FDA 34 suicides (87% of total reported) have occurred in the United States.

Nicotine is able to attach to a receptor, known as alpha4-beta2 nicotinic receptor, in the smoker brain causing him (or her) a sensation of pleasure. The varenicline drugs works by blocking this brain receptor so the smokers do not feel the need to smoke and it aids in the patients' smoking cessation efforts.

This is the second time that the FDA is warning the public and health care providers about the risks of the drug varenicline. Last year the FDA issue an FDA Early Communication About an Ongoing Safety Review in which was required that Pfizer, the manufactures o the drug, added the possibility of serious neuropsychiatric symptoms in the prescribing label information (pot Marketing experience section).

Today, with this new warning and the analysis that the FDA has done about the drug Chantrix, the FDA is asking Pfizer to add this safety information to the WARNINGS and PRECAUTIONS sections of the Chantix prescribing information. This a stronger form of WARNING that the one set last year.

My girlfriend and I both decided to quit smoking. I did a one-time laser treatment and a month later she decided to get hypnotherapy and chantrix. I have been smoke free for 16 weeks and am feeling great. Unfortunately, my girlfriend is not doing so well. She has been hospitalized twice and she is a wreck. I am frightened about this drug as I have seen what is doing to my friend... I hope the FDA pulls it off the market.

My aon took it AND I am so scared, he is in such a dark space, reading what the ones who lost their dad, their brother, I am so so sorry for you. Please sue these degenerates who took from you and are trying to take from so many of us our loved ones. Even a billion dollars won't help if you lose the one who makes life worth living, won't help us , but it will hurt them for doing it. If it takes from them pleasure is there anything that can counteract this? How long does it take to get this out of their system? I need to know how long I have to be scared to death?

I wonder how many people this drug has to kill (or cause them to commit suicide) Before they take it off the market? Surprises me that with ONLY 34 people dead they even bothered to mention it.

My doctor has told me that I have to quit smoking before he operates on me...This is because the workers comp company is requesting this...So they came up with this solution of this medication, I hope it works well with out all the side affects...It was so much easier to quit when I didn't have someone telling me I had to...

Well, On Chantrix a week and not smoking day 1. As a smoker for over 2 decades who's tried to quit every which way but loose... so far this Chantrix stuff seems like a Miracle. Concidering the sever side effects of smoking I think I'll chance it with the Chantrix... thanks very much.

I am sorry, but I must take exception at the comment "shoved down our throats." The drug companies are making it available, we are shoving it down our own throats. It is the responsibility of the patient and doctor to discuss the side effects and weigh the benefits versus the risks. It is beyond the capability of the drug company to do that, as each individual and their history and medical condition vary. The benefits this drug offer to the vast majority of smokers, who are NOT depressed, should not be withheld because of a few smokers who do not heed the product warnings and directions.

Chantix was very helpful for me in quitting smoking after 40 years and has also helped three other people I know, with no side effects that I have heard of. [snip] Well, I know of 2 people that took it to quit smoking and now they suffer from severe mental illness with suicidal thoughts - I guess if they kill themselves the drug companies still consider the treatment a success because they did quit smoking at least !
