Busting the Myths - Informing the Consumers

10: The definition of "organic"! While a lot of us are meant to believe that organic means all-natural and that means earthy goodness rather than chemical "ickiness" - the fact is that a lot of conventional methods -
pesticides, fertilizers containing synthetic ingredients and bioengineering - are all beneficial. You think of "pesticide" and all that comes to mind is "poison", but some pesticides pose very little threat to humans, especially in the amounts that survive the rest of the season, harvest, and washing produce when you get home (which you should always do). Also, they prevent BUGS from getting in/on the produce, which can ruin the produce and your health in just as many ways as pesticides possibly could. "Organic" itself is still not a clear concept, since the USDA and FDA recognize FOUR categories of "organic", ranging from "100% organic" (level as indicated) to "organic" (95% organic ingredients) to "made with (some) organic" (70% organic, 30% non-organic, no USDA organic seal). Oh, and did I mention that "organic ingredients" includes feces? You know, cow manure and other animal waste, not to mention the bugs crawling on it because no pesticides are allowed...

9: The myth of environmentalism! While most scientists WILL admit that organic methods MUST use the soil and natural fertilizers, so the soil is technically gaining nutrients (especially while in fallow) - not all will admit that it "conserves water". Also, the fact that the manure is all-natural means that it runs risks if not handled and/or composted properly. Uncomposted or improperly composted manure that enters surface waters many contain pathogens and subsequently contaminate produce - and that's coming from the United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association!

you should watch food inc. i think maybe you will change your perspective about not eating or buying organic foods.
Having had both organic and non-organic vegetables that were freshly picked, I have to say there is a difference in taste, and that the organic is better. However, you are right that non-organic tastes better a few days later. Unless you know personally someone who grows organic and can get it straight from them, its not worth it to buy organic, because by the time you get it, it's no longer fresh enough to be any better. If you do happen to know someone who grows organic it might be worth it to try. Tomatoes especially, benefit from being grown organic.
Whoever wrote this knew enough to research the data that backs up these points that support his opinion that people should not buy organic foods. I should know. I wrote this article and looked up the research and data. Thanks for playing, though.
Whoever wrote this doesn't know anything about organic. They obviously used opinion rather than actual data. Geesh...
In order to grow organic foods, one needs a large amount of land. Wheat grown organically becomes so overgrown with weeds that the wheat cannot grow properly resulting in lower yields. My point is that if all food was grown organically, 10 times the current amount of land would be needed; so f$%* you, animals we are taking all of your land in order to grow our food as inefficiently as possible. And in unrelated news, when was the last time anyone got sick from eating pesticide ridden foods? New technology along with strict FDA standards makes current pesticides completely safe; The problem with DDT is that it didn't break down fast enough like current pesticides I've lived on a farm all my life and eaten conventionally grown foods and I'm the healthiest person I know
id rather be obeast then eat organic food, its just a viciouse con really.
I hope you don't have kids!!!
To counter the absolutely absurd notion that organic produce isn't more nutritious: here's just one example of an easy-to-understand article that explains a bit on WHY organic produce DOES end up being more nutritious than non-organic. Admittedly, it may have more to do with an over-abundance of chemical fertilizers than just pesticides per se, but a veggie than has to fight off its own predators generation after generation is also going to pass on the genes for a higher vitamin & mineral content. And that HAS been shown by scientific research. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/03/25/HOG3BHSDPG1.DTL
I simply can't believe how incredibly misinformed this blog is... unless this blogger works for Monsanto or some other company benefitting from spreading such blatant misinformation to an already-largely-under-educated public. Every point this person makes is simply, flatly, wrong. I'm do environmental studies at UCSD, a major research institution, and the scientific community is LARGELY in agreement that pesticides are both damaging to people's health and horrible for the environment on SO many levels. Too bad my space here is limited! But don't take my word for it, rather, listen to this guy who is probably working for a company who makes pesticides. He's sure to tell you the truth about organic! Organic labeling is simple on produce. If it says organic then it is, and you know you won't be ingesting bugspray, and you won't be supporting unsustainable farming methods. The soil will heal in time if we let it. Bugs are an integral part of a healthy ecosystem, not the "enemy."
............great great article, you are so right about this. Organic food is one big lie and one big con........
