In 2004 I watched the Democratic National Convention on television along with millions of other Americans. It was then that the key note speaker, Illinois Senator Barack Obama certainly peeked my interest. His speech was both powerful and moving, truly like none I'd ever heard before and I was compelled to learn more about Barack Obama. I had never heard of Barack Obama before and did a Google search to learn more. I found that he had written a book "Dreams from My Father", which I promptly ordered and read. Later, I ordered his book "The Audacity of Hope". These books, I am now both proud and honored to say, have now been signed by Obama. I took them with me to Santa Fe and he autographed both of them. I encourage anyone who has an inclination to learn more about this inspiring man, who is now vying for the highest office in the land, to read these books.
When I heard that Mr. Obama would be speaking in Santa Fe last Friday there was no question in my mind, my husband and I would be going to Santa Fe to attend this event. We've heard portions of his speeches on television, and watched him in the numerous debates.
The event was held at the Santa Fe Community College, Witter Fitness Center Gymnasium. As two students passed us, they looked over in our direction saying "We think the line goes all the way to Mexico" and off they went looking for the end of it. The capacity of the building is 3600, and many who came could not get in. Yet, they didn't leave. They braved the cold and stood outside listening to Obama's speech over speakers. Everyone who came wanted to hear this man's message. Barack Obama has a pure heartfelt passion that resonates with the people. It certainly seems to motivate them.
The crowd was such a wonderful mixture of both young and old. They seemed to be from every walk of life and every ethnic group. Soon the room became electric. I could feel the positive energy build, even before Obama took the stage. When he did enter, the roar of the crowd was deafening. We would feel the room shake from the cheering many times that night. I can tell you there is nothing like hearing this man speak in person.
