When people think of taking a second job, retail is usually one of the first jobs that comes to mind. And for good reason: the jobs are plentiful, plenty of hours are available outside the 9-to-5 range, and no special skills are required.

The Positives
Contrary to popular belief, most retail chains are constantly hiring. They hire in droves during the months leading up to the holidays, but people are needed all year long. If you need a second job immediately, this is probably the quickest way to go. The interview process is quick and it's not unusual to be offered a job right then and there.

Retail is a great second job for social people. If you're talkative and friendly, the time flies by because you'll probably be busy. Still, you use a balanced part of body and brain whether you're helping customers find items or ringing the cash register. This job is tiring, but you're not dead at the end of four hours.

If you want to be serious about moonlighting and you're in good health (and you don't have a life), you can make retail a full-time second job. I have known people who worked 35 hours in a store in addition to their 40-hour-week job. Retail stores are flexible and most managers will work with you, especially if you're dependable.

One of the best things about choosing to moonlight in retail is the discount. Most offer at least five percent. Some stores offer at least 20 percent. If you're using the discount for items you would buy anyway (cleaning material, shampoo, etc.), it's like you're making extra money.

Retail jobs are stressful while you're doing them, but, when you leave, the job doesn't go home with you. You may have to deal with some gossips and some hateful customers, but you'll find it less stressful than many other part-time jobs.

Takeaways
  • In large department stores, it's not unusual for 25 percent of employees to be moonlighters.
  • Before taking a job, make sure you can avoid the temptation to spend your extra money.
  • Employee discounts are almost always a perk, even for part-time employees.
Did You Know?
The retail industry isn't the place to look if you want to keep your second job discreet.

Thanks Jody. Most of us have at one time or another worked in retail, so it's easy to get back into it. It's not the great place, but if you do enoough work, you can finda good gig.

Great article with wonderful points - retail jobs usually are available all year long, not just during the holiday seasons.
