A Brief Overview of Some of the Most Overrated Movies of All Time

How many times have you been told by critics or friends or dedicated review writers on Internet Movie Database that a certain movie is the greatest thing since the string bikini only to walk out of the theater or shut off the DVD player and wonder what all these people were smoking?
Every one of us has watched at least one movie that seems to be almost universally praised to the skies, but that leaves us scratching our head in befuddlement. The accolades awarded to Citizen Kane has pretty much doomed that film to being at the top of the list of movies to be termed overrated by anyone watching it for the first time today. In fact, Citizen Kane is a darn good movie by any standard, but I'm consistently stunned by what I consider to be the cinematic equivalent of a C-grade on a term paper that have been historically held up as examples of the finest that Hollywood has ever offered.

Ben-Hur.

I suppose long ago, when I was just a mere lad, I must have watched Ben-Hur all the way through. I can remember it airing on television as a special event and even at a young age had heard that chariot scene was exciting. That impressionable early viewing cemented only two memories of this Charlton Heston Oscar Black Hole in my young mind: the chariot race and the lepers. Other than, even today, I draw a blank. I just seriously don't understand the appeal of this long, boring movie. Charlton Heston is basically doing this standard Troy McClure stuff, showing none of the subtlety he displays in such films as Touch of Evil or Planet of the Apes. Everything builds up to that twenty minute chariot race sequence and it is admittedly worth slugging through to get to. But once it's over, Ben-Hur just completely loses my interest. And, to be perfectly honest, I find the podrace sequence in The Phantom Menace to be more rousing than the chariot race at this point.

The Sound of Music.

In no particular order (although the order of their appearance in my mind does say *something*): * CASABLANCA * Steven Spielberg's films in general (I am not saying he's "bad", but he is VERY overrated... although some of his films really ARE too cheesy to be considered good) * FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL (four times I've tried to watch it and find it funny... four times it turned into a "funeral" - well, no, actually I just turned the TV off and that was that) * STAR WARS * LOTR and/or HARRY POTTER (I can't believe people take them seriously) Cameron's TITANIC doesn't even count, I suppose - I cannot imagine a serious cinema (not just "special effects") - or "Titanic" - fan giving it the time of day... Oh, and most (not all) movies with Marilyn Monroe - who BTW is probably THE most overrated "star" of all times... N.B. "Citizen Kane" is NOT overrated - if anything, it is being severely underrated. And if I had more space - or time - to write, I could

The one that kills me is "Citizen Kane." I loved Ben Hur and a few others mentioned though!

Titanic makes my overrated list

Ironically, I'd pick The Phantom Menace as one of the most overrated. Haven't seen most of the ones you listed though.

Where's "Honey I shrunk the kids?" LOL. Great article!

Personally, I will never understand why "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" is considered so great.

My take on Ben Hur is similar to yours but for far different reasons. My father dragged me to see that movie when I was a kid. I was SO bored that I wanted to crawl out of the seat and I counted every single ceiling tile in the theater. Admittedly, that is the take of a young girl, one who was (yes, I admit it ) in love with The Sound of Music when I was young, too. Then I grew up and read the actual story of The Von Trapp Family Singers.

Congrats on being featured in AC's online magazine. Glad to see that and return to this article again for another look. Your personal take and the reasons for liking or hating these movies is appreciated.

You're not that brilliant either, and neither is your criticism.

Please do NOT forget Casa Blanca! Oh yeah...and ANY James Dean movie. The man could not act his way out of a shadow of a wet paper bag to save his life! The same goes for Marilyn Monroe...can you spell L-Y-S-O-L!!!!!!
