Let me start out by saying that I purchased my 1999 Ford Ranger Pick Up brand new in 1999, after having the truck for about a year and a half and putting on about 26,000 miles, I got rid of it for several reasons. Here are the top ten reasons why you should not buy a 1999 Ford Ranger Pick Up Truck:

10.Paint Quality: Within about 3 months the paint on my truck began to chip. This is hard to believe, I’ve heard of paint chipping on old vehicles but not new ones. This was not due to off roading or living out on a dirt road either.

9.Gas Mileage: I had a V6 and consistently got about 16-18 mpg doing mostly highway driving. I wasn’t doing “jack rabbit starts” or driving over the posted speed limits either. Granted the term fuel economy and truck do not usually go hand in hand. However a full size Chevy with a V6 gets about 25 mpg doing the same sort of driving. To me there is no reason why a “compact” truck should not be able to get the same.

8.Rattles: After about 15,000 miles I started to notice rattling throughout the dash and inner cabin. Again this is something that one would think you would not start to hear until many years of use, if at all.

7.Recalls: Ford had 3 recalls on this truck. The first for the windshield wiper relay that if not corrected to could fail and short out the entire electrical system. The second for the Bridgestone tires that could blow out. And the third for the cruise control system, the system could malfunction causing the throttle cable to stick, i.e. you can’t turn off the cruise control, or slow down the truck and you could crash.

6.Poor Craftsmanship: After having the truck for about 10 months, I started to notice this loud noise when I drove over 55 mph on the highway, the truck also started to shake. It was discovered at the dealership that a large bolt in the driveshaft assembly had snapped! Fixed under warranty, but it makes you feel real safe when you know bolts are breaking on the truck.

Takeaways
  • Within 1.5 years, my Ranger had lost half its resale value
  • Ford had 3 recalls on this truck
  • After about 15,000 miles I started to notice rattling throughout the dash and inner cabin

I have a 1999 Ranger XLT, 6 cyl 3.0. I bought it from a Ford dealer last year (2007) and according to them it was in good shape. I've had it for about a year now and God knows the long laundry list of faults with this truck. Where do we start? The crappy paint job that scratches and chips easily? The poorly made door cushoning that is lightly "glued" to the metal of the door frame whose rubber hangs out for everyone to see how crappy a job Ford did on this one? The windshield wipers that all of a sudden break down? The very sensitive fuel pump module that cost me $800 to fix? The easy denting of the front fenders? The OH SO TERRIBLE 14 mpg that it gets? This has by far been the most terrible buy that I've made. Do not get a 1999 Ford Ranger. Stick with the 2000 and above years. They seem to have better quality and mpg, though I would personally go with Toyota or Nissan now.

I also have the Ranger 4x4 sport package from 99. Mine has had the recalls taken care of, and no other problems. I drive it very hard, although not a lot, but it performs above and beyond most other trucks I've driven. Above 55 it is very loud, but 4x4 trucks, especially those with suicide doors and all-terrain tire, will be loud on the highway. I still have the original battery, and it works flawlessly. I perform the routine maintenance myself, which basically means oil changes, because I actually still have the original brakes and they are in good condition. If you had problems with a 99 Ranger, you caused them, or you got really unlucky.

I have a 1999 Ford Ranger 4x4 Sport - I don't drive it much - just to work (2 miles) and leisure/pleasure so I only have 91,000 miles on it as of 12/10/07. I had the recalls that you mentioned taken care of, but other than that, I take care of regular maintenance, oil changes, etc and it's a very reliable truck. It handles very well in snow (Eastern WA / Pullman). The OEM battery lasted until this summer (7 years) and that was the first major item to need replacement!

1993 Ford Ranger V6 3.0 265,000 miles 3 sets of tires. Never goes anywhere without pulling a trailer. You must have gotten a truck built on a Monday.

Wow sounds like you have really bad luck. My 1999 ford ranger has over 170,000 miles.I have had only to replace wear items like tires, brakes, belts. Plus around 30 MPG highway driving V6 3L. Still running strong with no rattles. I had two toyota's great trucks but there pricing made me change to ford and it has been just as good.
