The Job of a Telemarketer
There's a pause on the line. Immediately, we think, "It's a telemarketer." We are probably right but why do we dislike telemarketers as much as we do? After all, they are only trying to do their job. I am a telemarketer to an extent but I guess I'm a good telemarketer. I am not calling to tell you that your bills are past due or your account is now in collections. I am calling to tell you that I have free stuff for your new baby, which you will probably need because you signed up for it in the first place.
Being a telemarketer is a hard job to do. You never know what to expect on the other line. You can go from a good call to a horrible call in a matter of a couple seconds. People do not realize that you are calling them because you are required to do so. If you call more than once per day that will also create many different problems. With a lot of telemarketing companies the computers have automatic dialing systems so if the computer reaches an answering machine or nobody is on the line, the number will be thrown back into a pool of numbers to call.
This means that if you are at work, a telemarketer could call your phone every hour on the hour until you answer the phone because the computer system will keep getting answering machines. It doesn't mean that the telemarketer is purposely calling you this many times to make you angry, they are simply waiting fora person or live body to get onto the phone so they can do their job.
Telemarketers speak to parents that are friendly and some that are not. We reach children on the phones that screen the parents calls for them and they are always nice and pleasant. "My mommy is in the potty, can she call you right back?" They never hang up on us or tell us to stop calling because they do not know any better. The parent walks over to the phone and hangs up the phone on us, "It's just a telemarketer" they say. Almost as if we are computers that are calling them to ruin their day.
