Fantasy GEMS
The loss of former Florida Marlins fantasy gem Miguel Cabrera could very well have a trickle down effect on other former fantasy gems. In particular shortstop Hanley Ramirez and second baseman Dan Uggla have the most to lose from Cabrera's departure. However with Hanley transforming into an elite superstar shortstop in the MLB, I do not anticipate his statistics to fall all that much from 2006. Dan Uggla has been a surprise for both the Florida Marlins and fantasy managers in 2006 and 2007 respectively. Uggla's power numbers and runs should hold steady to the previous two seasons and he should again be a top 5 fantasy second baseman in 2008.

One player that has not lived up to his potential thus far is outfielder Jeremy Hermida. However with a strong finish to the 2007 season in which Hermida batted .340 with 10 homeruns, 36 RBI's and scored 37 runs after the all-star break, I anticipate him to become a solid fantasy contributor for the Florida Marlins in 2008. Thus even though the Florida Marlins will not have Cabrera's bat in the lineup for protection, a combination of Hanley Ramirez, Dan Uggla, and Jeremy Hermida should provide a good core for production in all three of these players stats.

Takeaways
  • Hanley Ramirez is a top 5 overall pick
  • Jeremy Hermida is a major breakout candidate
  • Cameron Maybin is a future fantasy gem
