There is an all important debate that continues in Cincinnati, Ohio. Who makes the best Cincinnati-style Chili? The contenders are Skyline Chili, Gold Star Chili or Dixie Chili? Cincinnati and the surrounding communities are filled with these busy Chili Parlors.

First, what is Cincinnati chili? The thing you need to know is that Cincinnati Chili is distinctively unique. It is not chili con carne. It is not a chili based stew with beans and tomatoes. Cincinnati chili is a meat sauce that you will find, most likely, over spaghetti and hot dogs. Though, through the years Cincinnati Chili has been the star ingredient of burritos, baked potatoes, and even french fries.

What do you do to finally find the winner of the best Cincinnati-style chili? You hit the streets! Now, I realize this is an unofficial poll. Hey, it is chili. What do expect? I actually went out and polled one hundred regulars of Cincinnati chili parlors. It did not take me long to realize my polling process was deeply flawed. I visited each chili restaurant and randomly asked diners what was their favorite Cincinnati chili? At Skyline Chili, Skyline Chili was the winner At Dixie Chili, Dixie Chili was the winner. At Gold Star Chili, Gold Star Chili was the winner.

The only thing left to do was a random poll. I asked friends, family, and mere acquaintances. I asked people in line at the grocery store. I asked people I passed in the mall. I asked the mailman and the cable guy. After I asked one hundred people, there was a clear winner. The winner of my very off the record, best Cincinnati-style chili is (drum roll please…) Skyline Chili! Out of one hundred Cincinnati Chili eaters, eight-two percent picked Skyline Chili.

Why hire a manager, when there is a chance they will rip you off, and steal money from behind your back, when you have a perfectly good, hard working son who is more than willing to run things while your gone? You tell me mike. If you really want to be a manager, you could work for us, and eventually you will get your own store! Skyline will make you a manager, but I've seen from personal experience, managers at gold star who move on to becoming store owners. It happens all the time.

Mike, please don't be bitter that I hit on the waitresses, and not you. It's not you man...its me. I don't swing that way. Keep in mind Mike, that going corporate isn't a good thing either. I think it's great we haven't turned into a McDonalds. Skyline sells stock on NASDAQ, and will greet you with the default greeting message given to them by corporate. Gold Star on the other hand is a franchise, complete with store owners who take hits from their pockets when pompous @$$holes like mike come back asking for refunds because the chili was cold by the time they drove 40 minutes home. We don't fight, we make it right, is our motto. Unfortunately this means we give out alot of our profits. I have been running this drive-through for 9 years, and for these 9 years, and still to this day, I give free refills through the drive-through, free water, free crackers, as much hotsauce and ketchup, and whatever else condiment you could ask for, OUT OF OUR POCKETS(that means free for YOU!!!). Skyline? Yeah, I guess so. But if I have a craving, I wouldn't pass two Dixies and a Gold Star just to get to a Skyline, but yeah. This coming from a Cinci refugee now in South CArolina, with 4 cases of skyline in the cupboard! As a marketing guy, I think Skyline is smart because they have figured out that it's not really the chili--seriously, could anyone pass a blindfold test? It's the experience. Clean restaurants, good service, interesting specials, etc. Gold Star? Way more family run, and that's not necessarily a good thing. The only qualification for management seems to be that you're in the family. The result is bored 22 year old managers more interested in hitting on the waitresses than running a restaurant. Anyway, thanks for the memories. And if you havent yet--get to Price Hill Chili on Glenway!!
