Pumpkin season is among us, and the themes of Halloween and fall harvest quickly approach as the temperature changes from moderate to brisk. As pumpkins sprout up across your town or city, spend a weekend or two to select, design, and create a magnificent work of art!

Selecting your pumpkin is the first step; track down local farmer stands or independent vendors for the largest and freshest variety. They’ll have the most selection and probably the most long-lasting for any of your creative endeavors. You’ll want to look for the following key traits:

• Unblemished and solid; mushy pumpkins don’t stand for much carving capabilities, so do make sure you select a firm and well-rounded pumpkin

• Smooth and symmetrical: although difficult to find precise symmetry, the smoother and more even the pumpkin is, the easier it will be to carve it and keep it standing for a few weeks.

• Range of sizes: create a crop of pumpkin carvings and sculptures in a variety of sizes including small gourds and medium sizes for windowsills, and larger ones for porch steps and centerpieces

• Store in a cool location before beginning any carving. You’ll want to make sure the pumpkin lasts for at least 6 weeks in its most solid state!

After your selection process is complete, it’s time to start carving. Selecting your own designs can be hard for those uncreative types, but there are plenty of printable stencils and even stencil makers available online.

Basic sites such as the Spookmaster website offer free .pdf files of many traditional and non-traditional stencils including American flags, ghosts, and simple ‘Happy Halloween’ messages. The Pumpkin Wizard also opens up creative and inspirational ideas from cartoon characters, celebrity portraits, musicians, and sports teams. Better Homes & Gardens offers a free membership; after registration, you can create an Jack-O-Lantern-style pumpkin face  and print it off. Place the stencil directly onto the pumpkin, trace the outline, and carve away!

Takeaways
  • Take pumpkin carving to the next level with specialty designs of characters and famous people
  • Select the smoothest and most solid pumpkins to last through the season
  • Use downloadable stencils to create a pumpkin carving masterpiece!
