Minneapolis, Minn. -- At 6:45 when I arrive, the line to cast a ballot has wound out the door, down the sidewalk, and almost to busy Nicollet Ave. Voters are turning out in record numbers to cast their ballots for the next democratic presidential nominee. Ahead of me, a young gay couple chatters excitedly about voting. One of the girls I recognize from college, although I don't remember her name. The other woman is a newcomer to Minnesota and is nervous about her temporary license. Behind me, a large group of very diverse 'kids' are talking loudly, most of them are like me, first-time participants in a primary.

The line is spattered with middle-aged Caucasian couples, teen-aged African-Americans, single moms in their twenties with their kids along and entire Somali families that have come out to cast their vote in the democratic caucus. Nearly every set of lips is discussing the same name, Obama. Our caucus location, a protestant church on a busy city street, has recently been renovated and expanded. It's still far too small for the massive crowd that's been growing since the late afternoon hours. The 5th congressional district of Minneapolis is densely populated and staunchly democratic. In 2006 we elected Keith Ellison as our congressman. The first black-Muslim-American man to hold such an office, he chose to be sworn in using the Qur'an instead of the Bible. We're proud of our diversity here. Proud of our tolerance and proud of the unique position we hold in this historic election.

Very nicely done.

Mike - Thanks for the heads up. :) I agree that your first person take is very well done. Another thing I really liked- the way you had three simple subheadings which focused on key points. It'd be interesting to get your take on recent developments. I read articles from people of all political parties and I give thumbs up to any which are written with detail and solid reporting. I am impressed by your ability to provide information like this: " the highest number of voters under 30 who participate in elections " (I hadn't known this, sorry to say) as well as the sense of tension and excitement. I'm glad I had a chance to see this. :)

I had to read it one more time. I think it's the best-written piece I've seen on AC. Just to start, the way you use the active present tense. Somehow we have to get more people over to read this.

I'm surprised it was that busy before 7am, but it's great to see such a turn out. And I agree with MWT, this is excellent reporting.

Thank you Mike, those are wonderful things to read. : ) I do like Hillary, and a small part of my head is yelling at me for not voting for her. But I agree with you, she's trying to pull the wool over on too many things. Aside from preferring Obama's health care agenda, I approve of his past far more. Clinton was an attorney for Wal-Mart. How any self-respecting liberal work for the Walton's is beyond me. Meanwhile, Obama was working with church groups to help the underprivileged in Chicago. I think that's the kind of president we need. Not one who lets her husband run his mouth like a fool. That being said, if she's named as the nominee, she's got my vote without a nanosecond of hesitation.

Part Two from Me: I was watching Hillary do an interview on the Tavis Smiley show and although I am for Obama, I was impressed, she seemed to be handling herself very well. Then I saw a reminder of her gross deceit. She told Tavis that she had won the "Michigan Primary" and he was not sophisticated or informed enough to know better, that the national Democrats had put a pox on Michigan Demorcrats for having the gall to move up the primary to January 15. Therefore none of the candidates on the Democratic side (Edwards, Dodd, Biden were still in there) competed in Michigan, but Hillary played some trick of leaving her name on the ballot, and now is claiming "victory." I know this is complicated, but being from Michigan I know it is entirely corrupt on her part. I want to support Obama as being FOR Obama, not AGAINST Hillary, but her corruption (and Bill's racism) must be stopped. -- Mike Again

Lucida, I know this is just a message on a computer, but I really admire you. I do not know which career field you will choose, but you definitely could choose journalism and be excellent. Your writeup makes me feel as if I were there with you. Maybe someone could say that I am saying this just because I am also for Obama, but that is not it, I am looking at the quality of what you have written......... As for Barack, I watch C-Span and probably like hundreds of thousands of other supporters, I'm wanting to give him advice. The naysayers are going to say that he lacks experience, and sometimes he says this about himself, but he is wrong, he actually with his community organizing and state government service (very impaortant because much federal funding goes through states) is among the most experienced, or shall we say, "best experienced." I know I'm running out of space. You're the greatest, Lucida, you give me hope.
