On a continuous basis, Hollywood would rehash another romantic comedy to stimulate your lady's emotions and sucker you into a film you don't want to see. Then there are the more serious movies that do look somewhat better than those supposedly funny chick flicks, but still look down-right dull being that they are chick flicks. But then there are the more artsy romantic movies that perhaps you can both enjoy, considering if either of you have that somewhat artsy persona. That bohemian attitude. One such movie is Buffalo 66. A great romantic film which is ironically more about the male protagonist than it is about the female. Ex-convict Billy Brown has been released from prison after taking the fall for a mobster's crime in order to protect his family. Now, he's back in the real world and he doesn't know what to do. He has no money, no car, and honestly no friends (not that he ever did.)
After taking a leak at a ballet class, he kidnaps Layla, played by Christina Ricci, in order to gain motor transportation. He then uses her to pose as his wife in order to verify all those letters he sent his parents on how he got married and is living the American dream. But Layla blows his cover a little by saying that Billy Brown now works for the CIA and that she thinks that he is the most handsome man in the world.
The parents do not necessarily deny Billy's new life story, but they do not give it much credit either. The only redeeming falsity that is brought to the table is when Layla asserts that she is pregnant. Layla's enthusiasm for her acting as a CIA wife only ticks Billy off as they fight later in the car like an old couple.
Though a very unlikely and a bit unrealistic pairing, the movie progresses into various story-telling with a unique directing style. The audience gets insight into Billy's past with small flashbacks to him as a child to him as a man-child. We also get subtle insight into Layla's attitude as we see her perform a tap-dance after Billy chokes on boiling.
