Has there ever been a more disappointing 18-1 team in NFL history? Well, the Patriots lost the one game that truly counted in 2007 - the one in Arizona. Even with their spygate penalty in the 2008, New England has the #7 pick from a trade with San Francisco. The Patriots have many question marks heading into 2008, especially for a team three points from unmatched NFL glory and a 4th title in 7 seasons.

The records of Tom Brady and the offense are widely-known, so I don't need to dwell on numbers like Brady's 50 TDs, Moss' 23 or Moss and Welker combining for 210 catches. The offensive line was dominant, except in the two games against New York - they gave up a season-high 5 sacks in the Super Bowl. Six players on defense had at least 3.5 sacks, while Asante Samuel had 6 interceptions, one returned for a TD. New England won 12 games in 2007 by 10+ points and opened the season with 8 straight games scoring 34+ points. The Patriots also scored a record 589 points in 2007.

Heading into 2008, the Patriots have more than a couple decisions to make. The linebackers are aging rapidly (only Adalius Thomas is still at his physical peak), Asante Samuel could be bought on the free agent market, Randy Moss will be a contract decision and leaders Rodney Harrison and Tedy Bruschi looked more old than experienced in the Super Bowl. That being said, the #7 pick in the 1st round is a nice way to start off the NFL draft for New England. Before a couple late-season wins by San Francisco, New England could of have the #3 pick. The Patriots were rumored to be interested in Darren McFadden, but he would require a trade-up from #7, something the Patriots rarely do. Lawrence Maroney looked strong late in the season, so why use another 1st round pick on a running back. The position New England can target in the 2008 NFL draft are: linebacker (2), safety and cornerback.
