Weddings can be big budget busters. You can save money on some elegant items for your wedding by making some items yourself. There are lots of ideas online and in books you can check out from the library. I have had luck making the easier items. I would suggest the following things that are fairly easily made at home: wedding candle, veil, wedding favors, flower girl accessories, wedding program, and a wedding card holder.

This article will give you the instructions you need to make a beautiful and unique gift card holder made out of a birdcage - either old or new. Having a gift card holder is nice because your guests will have a pretty, safe place to slip their gift cards into, without worrying that they will get lost among bigger presents. You can have a one-of-a-kind wedding decoration that serves a useful purpose and be a conversation piece.

First, you need to find a birdcage. You may have one, or you may locate one at a thrift store. You can also check at pet stores and ask if they have either an old one or new one you may purchase. You will then want to thoroughly clean it out by spraying it with water and soap if needed. Let it dry. Take out any hanging perches or water bottles of course. You can re-insert the perch later for decorating later on.

Next, spray paint the birdcage inside and out with several coats of white paint. Apply several light coats of matte or glossy paint. If the birdcage is scuffed or rusted, you can lightly sand those areas first, or after your first coat of paint. Use matte finish if the birdcage is not perfect because it won't show the imperfections as well.

When the paint looks good, you can get to the fun part of decorating your birdcage. Think about the colors in your wedding, and coordinate your ribbon to those colors. Either weave ribbon between the bars to add color, or use artificial trailing ivy. You can also use tulle to decorate your birdcage. I used tulle to keep things simple and elegant.
