It's not all that unusual for notable people in show business to be admitted to psychiatric wards. It's been a long-standing situation for many going back decades--despite it seemingly increasing lately. The increase seems to give my theory a boost that the paparazzi are driving (literally and figuratively) the most-viewed celebrities slowly insane. When Britney Spears was interviewed by NBC's Matt Lauer a couple of years ago in one of her rare one-on-one interviews--those previously-withheld tears she displayed during the interview were a true cry for the paparazzi to...ok, I'll say it, leave her alone...yesterday. Paparazzi are starting to make being a celebrity an impossibility that will only make living in Hollywood less attractive to ensuing generations. It's also creating a whole new mental illness in newer-generation celebrities who just can't handle having no privacy whatsoever on a day-by-day (and even hour-by-hour) basis.
Call that mental illness an amalgam of differing conditions. The heart of it, though, is likely plain old depression--and the realization of "how did I get myself into this trap that I can't escape from?"

Well, during a slightly less invasive time in Hollywood--a lot of celebrities just had mental issues as a part of their natural chemistry or from incidents in their personal past. Here's a short list I've carefully selected of notables from all eras that should give a better insight into what other celebrities (both long gone and still alive) have gone through and whether being in psychiatric treatment truly helped them...

Van Damme with self worth issues? Now I know I'll be okay. I tend to agree, but this raises the question, is Hollywood a microcosm of society. It seems incident of depression and bi-polar diagnoses are ever increasing. I'm sure living in a glass house makes it worse. I think your article, the celebrities mentioned, and the state of society point to the fact that fame and fortune are certainly not the cure for all of our ills (as many of us lowly plebians may think).
