As a child I fell asleep to the sounds of nature's wind chimes, bamboo knocking together outside my window. I learned early, that what I thought was a tree grew very quickly and could take over the property if allowed to do so. I loved it. What most of the world, and I, did not know at that time was what a great material this would soon be for our homes and our environment. I started hearing whispers about using bamboo as an alternative to hard wood flooring a few years ago, and now it is gaining momentum for cabinetry. What a great idea! It is as beautiful as hard wood, available in different colors, like hard wood, and priced from the reasonable end to the more expensive, also like hard wood. There are some major differences though, which make bamboo the obvious choice for your next remodel project.
I have already proven the durability of this product with my cutting board. I slice on it and throw it in the dishwasher on a regular basis. It has held up through all this wear and tear. My previous wood cutting board split in two in the dishwasher. It could not hold up to the heat and moisture. Bamboo actually prefers a moist environment and holds up to heat. So, if that is the environment that it grows well in it ought to be able to stand the abuse in my kitchen.
Today, the world is becoming more aware of our surroundings and trying to repair or slow down the damage we have caused. A tree, oak, pine or any other commonly used wood, can take many years to grow and grow back after it is chopped down to make a cabinet. Since bamboo is a grass, disguised as a tree, it replenishes itself relatively quickly. Five to six years is the recommended time to let bamboo grow before using it for building materials. This is much less time then your average tree. Because it replenishes very quickly, we can rest assured that bamboo will still be around for our children, and their children to use in their own kitchens.
