First, what reason does Mitt Romney have for suspending his campaign? Second, what does it mean to "suspend" a campaign?
In the beginning of his campaign, Mitt Romney achieved notable victories in the Nevada, Maine, Michigan and Wyoming primaries. However, he finished Super Tuesday with a disappointing 171 delegates. Although his campaign spent significantly more money in pursuit of the Republican nomination, his final count of 270 delegates paled in comparison to John McCain's Super Tuesday delegate count of 504.
However, Mitt Romney did achieve victories in the states of Massachusetts, Alaska, Minnesota, Colorado and Utah. Hope is not lost. However, without significant victories on Super Tuesday, Mitt Romney will be forced to carefully consider whether or not he still has a legitimate shot at the White House.
CNN reports that the rules for regarding the suspension of a campaign vary from party to party. In the Republican party, decisions on how to allocate delegates is left to the state parties. It is important to note that Romney has merely "suspended" his campaign. He has not dropped out of the presidential race yet. Therefore, he will keep any state delegates he has already won.
The former Massachusetts Governor is not out of the race yet, but the outlook is significantly more bleak for Mitt Romney that is was this past Monday.
