It's easy to confuse many films as a cult classic. A cult film refers to movies that come with a devoted following, but not always a large following. They can be a small group of fans that are really devoted to the film. These films are the source of the obsessive subculture of "fandom." Just keep in mind, just because it has a rabid fan base, doesn't mean it's a cult film.

The first movie to be considered a cult film was the 1981 movie "Mommie Dearest," which is about the life of Joan Crawford and her "alleged abusive relationship with her adoptive daughter." No one will ever forget the most famous line from this film, "No wire hangers, EVER!"

No list can be complete without the movie "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." It's been said that this is the longest running movie of all time. Somewhere is America you can still see a midnight showing of this classic movie. Not only that, but every year for Halloween someone somewhere is dressing up as one of the characters in the film.

"The Goonies" is a film that every family should own. What kid didn't try to go looking for buried treasure after seeing this film? T-Shirts have sold like hotcakes and people everywhere have screamed "Hey you guys!" like Sloth and did the truffle shuffle just like Chunk.

Just mention the film "Say Anything" and women will swoon. Who could forget when Lloyd (John Cusack) stood outside Diane's (Ione Skye) house holding the oversized boom box playing the Peter Gabriel hit "In your eyes?" Many people have wondered how this movie can be considered a cult film, but thanks to the large devoted fan base it is.

"The Breakfast Club," "Drop Dead Fred," "Fast Times At Ridgemont High," "Sixteen Candles" and "Heathers" are all considered cult classics due to their large following and high DVD sales even years after being released to video and DVD.

"Star Wars," "Lord Of The Rings" and "Harry Potter" are not necessarily considered as a "cult classic," but you can't deny their large and extremely dedicated following. No matter where you go, you can run into a "Treki" or a "Ringer" walking down the street.
