Atlantic City, N.J. -- Last week I was invited to attend a show for a Black History event by one of my musician friends. It was a timely invitation as I had thought to myself as January was ending I should engage in Black History this year as it seems to slip off my To-Do list in recent years for some unknown reason.

On Monday February 4, I discovered I would be attending Winceyco Entertainment Group's presentation of "Promises" in Atlantic City, NJ. Winceyco is a company which has been presenting musical assemblies to schools for the past 23 years, comprised of trained actors and musicians. This year Winceyco is celebrating both the 54th anniversary of Brown vs. Bd. of Education and the 49th anniversary of Motown.

The day began at elementary school, Uptown School Complex where two shows were presented. The first show at 8:30 am was for kindergarten through 2nd grade students. As I got comfortable to watch the show I was curious how she would be able to keep the student's attention so early in the morning. What made "Promises" so special was that the children were engrossed by Wincey Terry, the presentation's main orator and vocalist, because of her ability to include the students in the presentation through her effortless call and response interactive approach.

The students learned about the Little Rock 9 and the newspaper created to chronicle the struggle created by the integration of black children into a Little Rock, Arkansas public school. The husband and wife team of L.C. and Daisy Bates were activists, who created the paper, The Arkansas State Press due to his experience working presses and her consultations with the children.

I had not heard of this organization but it certainly seems like they pack a lot of information into their presentation, musical performances, etc. Thanks for the information and a "heads up" to readers. Please read to the last page so you can find out how to contact this group.
