Hot Flash Relief from Effexor XR

Can an Antidepressant Really Relieve Menopausal Symptoms?

I was beginning to get accustomed to hot flashes occurring in my life on a sporadic basis. I had been in the beginning stages of menopause known as perimenopause for a couple of years before my symptoms became unmanageable. I
could actually go for several weeks and not have hot flashes. My moods were generally happy the majority of the time. ( I don’t know if you would get the same opinion from my husband!) I was beginning to accept my menopausal symptoms and was actually quite optimistic that they were not going to be overwhelming. I had a hysterectomy several years ago but thankfully still had one ovary. This fact meant that I would go through a menopause and would have the typical slow reduction in hormone levels. I believed I was prepared for the hot flashes that were to come. I did not obviously have the decline in menstruation to gage just how much or little my ovary was still functioning. Then my menopause symptoms became almost unbearable! I went from occasional hot flashes to feeling as if my body was on fire from the inside! I also found it difficult to be around my loved ones and I’m positive it was even more difficult to be around me! Everything and everyone began to annoy me. My brain felt fuzzy and I was beginning to think my memory could actually be dripping out through the skin on my head along with the gallons of constant perspiration!

I am contemplating going on Effexor XR for hot flashes. Previously I took a very low dose HRT for hot flashes and night sweats. Last year I finished chemo and radiation for breast cancer and had to discontinue HRT. Now the hot flashed are back and I'm miserable and have been trying to tough it out. My Mom took Premarin until she died at age 94 because she could not deal with her mood swings and hot flashes. Do genetics play a role in menopausal symptoms? I'm seeing my DR. on Monday to discuss this but I also take 40 mg. of Lexapro for depression and research shows that Effexor and Lexapro should not be combined. Has anyone else faced this issue?

I also am on Effexor - but had to be "upped" to 150mg to mostly control my hot flashes. I still have a few everyday - just not as intense as they were before Effexor. I just am so thankful for the relief that the drug has given me. I did not want to take any HRT due to negative reports. My Dr. recommended I try this as a last ditch effort. I've been perimenopausal for 3 years with strong hot flashes. No period in 3 years either - I hope I will be able to take a blood test soon and find that I am menopausal - jeez! I'm not one bit worried about having a hard time getting off the effex. Those strong hotflashes every 45 minutes all day and all night just about killed me! So glad I found this place!

I have a history of breast cancer in my family so could not take traditional hormones. Thankfully my GP knew about Effexor for hot flashes. It helped me almost immediately -- before that, my hot flashes were so bad that I was considering quitting my job. Imagine teaching 7th graders and all of the sudden starting to sweat buckets -- with wet hair and face dripping!! It was awful. After a year on the 75 mg, I have had to up my dosage to 150 mg. I guess your body eventually gets used to it. I could care less if it is addictive because I don't plan to stop until someone can guarantee me that I will never have another hot flash. I also like being able to have an occasional drink and not start sweating -- Effexor has been an answer to my prayers.

Hi Brenda, I'm not a doctor and can't give medical advice, but I'm sure your doctor knows what's best for you. The Effexor you're taking is probably the same, the XR is just extended release capsules. Since you're taking it twice a day there's probably not much difference. I'm still on my same low dose and haven't had any problems with it. I eventually had additional surgery and no longer could produce any hormones, so I'm now on a low HRT therapy, too. My hot flashes came back and were unbearable. There's no doubt the Effexor helps my moods and depression, so I really don't see a need to try to discontinue it anytime soon. I still only take a 75 mg dosage. I wish you the best of luck with it and thanks to all of you. I appreciate you reading my article and taking the time to leave comments. I wish all of you good health and the very best.

I have had hot flashes for the past 5 years. I have had a heart attack and melenoma. HRT is not an option for me. I've started on Effexor, but it's not XR. Only been on it for three days. Do you have to take the XR for it to work? I take 37.5 in the and and pm. This isscary stuff though. Anyone have any advise?

I have been on & off Effexor XR for years for bipolar disorder/depressive affects. I went through menopause without any hot flashes at all ! or any of the other symptoms associated with this time. I am currently increasing my dose to 225 mg. I have had no problems whatsoever with this drug ! Do what your Dr. says !

I am on estrogen therapy (for only 5 weeks now ) had a total hysterecomy (Incuding removal of the ovaries) - I had only mild hot flashes (definityely liveable) until the insominia started in about week 6 - have been on the HRT for 6weeks started at .3 then to .626 now on a patch 0f 1.0 and still having insomina and now just an overall feeling of awful - including a weird aura which makes me think I'm losing my mind - thinking of trying the effexor and wanted to hear stories of others who have tried it.

I was prescribed Effexor for anxiety I was experiencing when I moved and started a new job. It worked wonderfully to the point I didn't want to stop taking it . . . and I knew I didn't need it anymore. I was on it for about two years but never took more than 75mg./day. Instead of stopping the medication I decreased the dose myself. I divided the 75mg into 3 so I was only taking 25mg/day. Near the beginning of this year I completely stopped taking it. It's been about 3 months since I stopped but I have to tell you my hot flashes are horrible. They are more often and I sweat like a stuck pig and my face feels so hot. ugh. I'm thinking of starting the Effexor again. I have a perscription for the rest of the year. I may see if it helps these hot flashes. I really don't want to take hormones. My Mom got cancer that I'm sure was related to her hormone therapy.

Ladies, I feel the need to warn those of you who have started on effexor for hot flashes about the absolute HELL that lies in store for you when you attempt to discontinue this drug. I, too, was prescribed effexor for hot flashes in October of 2006. It stopped working after a few months on 37.5, so I was told to up the dose to 75mgs. Did that. Worked for a few months, then the flashes returned again. Was told to double the dose to 150mgs. I was noticing a weight gain that the prescribing MD said was unrelated to the med. (I run 25-30 miles per week). Went up to 112.5 as a compromise. A few months later.....hot flashes, WORSE THAN EVER HOT FLASHES! Suspected that they were actually being caused by the effexor. Decided to start tapering off, but, since I am a licenced clinical social work therapist with some knowledge about medications, figured I should enlist my prescribing MD's help in doing this. Called my MD who told me that since it was not prescribed for depression, I co
