Learning how to surf is something that many would like to do when they visit Hawaii. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned surfer, there is nothing that compares to surfing in Hawaii. If you are looking for some waves to learn on then your first stop should be Waikiki. The waves are not that big and are a lot more forgiving than the monsters that barrel on the north shore.

The only problem is the fact that there a thousand other tourists that will be out on the waves with you, not to mention locals wanting to get their water time in. You can head down to the world famous Waikiki beach and rent a board for ten dollars an hour. In a few minutes you will be paddling out to catch your very first wave. However, if you do not feel confident, you can pay a little more and get an instructor who is already out in the water to help you out.

If you want to chance it on your own, then I would suggest using a larger board, the bigger the better. The bigger it is the easier it will be to catch waves. Using a board that is to small will only cause you to get frustrated and will have you leaving a little earlier than expected.

Get yourself a board and make sure to position your body so you are not too forward and not too back. Your toes should be at the end of the board and you should try to balance yourself right down the center of the board. Paddle with one arm at a time to build up speed. Once you are out in a good spot watch the waves to see where it is breaking. You do not want to be too far out that you need to paddle like crazy and don't catch anything. And you do not want to be too far in that you are not able to get on any waves.

Once you are in a good spot and see the waves breaking and coming then paddle like crazy until you feel the push from the wave. Brace yourself to stand up and you are now surfing. Okay, it is a lot harder than that and you will probably have to practice your pop up when you are on the shore, but it can be a ton of fun.
